CHOBITS

“Chii?”

In the near future, humanoid personal computers will have spread throughout society. These persocons will have completely integrated themselves into our world, allowing man more convenience than ever before. But they are still machines after all, and the programs that allow them to function have finite limits... except for one series of persocons called... CHOBITS.

Motosuwa Hideki is an eighteen-year-old attending a college prep school. More than anything else, he wants to enjoy the more luxurious things in life, namely, having a persocon of his own. But like all luxuries, persocons aren't cheap, and the poor former farmboy turned college reject can't seem to scrounge up enough dough... But one day, as luck would have it, he finds and picks up an abandoned persocon, one who is found to have no memory nor OS installed. Nevertheless, she is extremely lovely in appearance, so Hideki takes her home with him and names her the one thing she is able to say, "Chii." Somehow though... Chii seems different from other persocons. Could she be one of the legendary Chobits? One thing is for sure... Hideki got a LOT more than he bargained for.

Personal outlook on the show:

I had first heard of CHOBITS when I was lazily strolling through a Barnes and Noble and picked up a ten dollar graphic novel, hoping I could bribe my mother into buying it before I even really knew what it was.  She said no so I spent the next hour actually reading it and really got into it.  I’ve always been a fan of robots-falling-in-love-with-humans type stories (hence, my favourite movie is Edward Scissorhands) so it didn’t take me much to get into this manga.  The anime(animation) and manga(comics) are very similar so far, I’m surprised that the anime hasn’t even been released in the US yet whereas the first graphic novel is already available.

A boy named Hideki fails to make it to college so now he’s spending a year in cram school trying to prepare himself for the next year and suffer as a ronin (someone who didn’t make it to college their first time) as short as possible.  Well, he wants a persecon computer, lifelike computers, each with their own unique look, but he can barely scrape up the money for rent, even more, a six thousand dollar computer.  Well, he finds one in the trash and that’s when it all begins.  I find that this show has a high amount of “fan service”, being that there are a lot of things such as men touching the wrong areas of women on accident or catching a woman at a bad time of dressing and such.  I’m not really a fan of shows who do this, because it’s almost like they try to replace quality with anything droolworthy of those who fall for its trap.

Now, the first episode, when he found her in the trash, she wore nothing but bandages that barely covered around her body.  Since we didn’t feel comfortable showing this in front of a teacher and students in the school environment, we suggested editing.  Well, edit that and you have a ten minute episode.  Not to mention a few other things that just simply couldn’t be changed.

Yes, the second episode was very slightly edited on four different occasions but because Langtry did this on the computer, he could catch it frame by frame so that it wasn’t overly obvious where it was edited, whereas when I tried it on the VCR, it skipped around too much and was very obvious and not very well done.  Being that while I’m making this site, I’m unsure whether or not this will be a link from the Southeast website itself, I’ll keep what was edited to myself.
