The photograph of me was taken in April 2001. I'm standing front of Albert (you know who he is- Einstein!) and the poster says "Peace cannot be kept by force. It can only be kept by understanding."- In my little office. | Taken in 1999 in the first few months at
University of Essex. This is where my next 3 wonderful years would be (God
willing) spent. |
Well now having given a visual
picture of myself let me briefly introduce myself. I was born as a little baby
(sorry no photo's) on November 7th 1976 at De-Soyzapura hospital
Colombo-Srilanka.
The names of my parents are Navaratnam Kunarajah (Dad) and Nancy Kunarajah
(Mum)- See Photo Collection. I
already had a little sister ( well didn't know
before I was born!), Sharon Sharmaline Kunarajah, who was born on July 19th
1973. She was a sweet little kid!- Well I learnt self defense from her later in
my life through the few world wars we declared against each other (No offence
sis!). My dad and mum were from the Northern part of Srilanka known as Jaffna
but have been working in Colombo, from a few years before they got married.
Don't ask me the year because I cannot remember when they got married. Ask
Sharon because she's good at all these statistics. Only thing I know is that
they have been married more than 25 years.
Dad worked over 30 years in the Srilankan Ports Authority and now is retired,
while mum too has clocked nearly the same time at Central Bank Srilanka and
still doesn't want to quit! We have lived down Waidya Road, Dehiwela nearly all
of our lives. Dehiwela, I could call it a little village (not exactly) near the
sea, it has the honor to have the one and only National Zoo and it is just
behind our road. Don't worry we don't get Chimpanzees or lions roaming about our
back garden! But I think the atmosphere of animals near us has influenced
the whole family to have pets. It's a long list of pets we have had! Let me try
to remember all of them.
In the early 80's we had love birds and a faithful dog called Rexy. Then we went
through a phase of having a mini farm at the back garden. My dad reared about
20-30 hens and cocks of many varieties. We did have some strange looking ones
too courtesy of the zoo. Then from nowhere turkeys joined our little(??)
company. Well for my part I contributed with less threatening pets like 70 odd
fish in a big bath tub and a cat called pussy (easy name!). I still love fish
and I had Gold fishes, Angels (my favorite), sword tails, guramies, tiger barbs,
scavenger (ugly one!), black mollies + many more...... Hey I nearly forgot, had
also a water turtle. I think it's called a red head turtle because of the red
stripe on its face. I had it separately and it ate lot of meat. I learnt
its appetite the harder way because I had the turtle with all my fish and hey
presto!- Mr.Turtle thought that I had given him a buffet and started feasting on
my fishes and had a different meal everyday! Someone should have told me about
Turtles! Then I got a parrot. To beat me my dad got some duck eggs,
tricked the hens to lay on them and hatch them. The mother hen must have got a
surprise to see some different chicks among her own chicks. She probably knew
the ugly duckling story! You got to watch this mother hen to know the true love
she showed to all her kids (Ducks included!). In the 90's we got a Labrador and
named it Darius (King Darius from the Bible), strange name but that was my
sisters choice! Now we have another addition, Ezer a Caucasian shepherd from
Russia, he is nearly 2 yrs( 2001) old. Russia?? Well my sister spent 7 years in
Russia at Tver medical College and graduated as a doctor in 2000 July. Well I
haven't mentioned my mom at all and don't assume that she had no love for
animals. The three of us did the buying and my mom did the maintaining of the
animals. We all owe a big thank you to her, for her patience with all these
animals around the house. Sometimes we exceeded the limit by considering these
animals as part of the immediate family, especially Sharon, feeding the
dogs off her own plate of food, cats and dogs sleeping with us on the bed!
As I write this page on 5th May 2001, my sister has settled down in Canada recently with Devapalan her husband. They got married on August 9th 2000 in Srilanka and you can see the photos in my Photo Collection page. My parents are living in Colombo in the same house (probably with a few additions to the animals) while I'm studying in England. At the moment I'm doing my research at University of Essex on Optical Fibre Communication. Please don't assume that I know a lot of science and can repair washing machines (that's what my mom thinks!). I love what I'm doing and love cricket too, but I'm not completely fanatic about it. The only person I'm completely in love with and crazy about is Jesus Christ and I'm not ashamed to say that. Why should I, because he's the only one (not my degree, sports or even the pets) who gave my life a meaning and I know that Jesus died for me on the cross. Please do check the rest of the site including the photographs taken over the years and sign my guest book. If God has blessed you and spoken to you through these simple pages thank God first and share it with others.
