Frequently Asked Questions

Since Libertarians are still the exception rather than the rule, not everyone knows what the Party stands for, and the promise that it holds for America. Here are some questions that may come to mind, and more will be added just as soon as they are asked.

Aren't Libertarians and liberals the same thing?

NO! Libertarians are concerned first and foremost with preserving your personal liberties, which are being disposed of at a furious pace. This is being accomplished  by well intentioned but short-sighted politicians, who are "liberal" mostly with your tax dollars, and your Constitutional freedoms.

What makes you think you can end the income tax?

The Federal government is spending  money on everything from other countries national defense to worm research. The Founding Fathers and the Constitution never intended to that the US government  be all things to all people, nor that the population be taxed to make it so.

We advocate that most Federal programs be eliminated or privatized, and that the US military be limited to a defensive role for the United States only. The few remaining Constitutionally proscribed functions of the government could easily be paid for by the taxes and tariffs levied on imported and exported goods.

I've heard Libertarians want to legalize drugs.

The war on drugs has been a failure. One only has to look at the exploding prison population, the violent crimes on the street, and the eroding rights of innocent citizens to know that something else has to be done, and soon.

The prohibition on alcohol in the 20's made criminals out of people engaged in minding their own business in their own home, while fueling organized crimes profits with inflated black-market prices.  Today, the war on drugs has been no more effective than the war on alcohol, and costing us billions of dollars in the process. Also, new laws regarding privacy and  property rights are stripping away the rights of everyone in the name of convicting a few more criminals.

The Libertarian Party does NOT endorse the irresponsible use of any intoxicant. With rights come responsibilities, as any parent can tell you. Endangering others is nobody's right.

Wouldn't I be throwing away my vote?

NO! Sure, you can vote for the other two parties, but where has that gotten you? Sure, you can vote for Bush just because you don't want Gore in office, but you would be settling for the lesser of two evils If you don't vote for who you believe in, you can never have a government you can believe in.

How can you eliminate Social Security and welfare?

See question 2. If we all had the 40% of our paycheck that is now taken in taxes, we could fund our retirement in a big way, better support our churches and private charities and make sure our money was going for a cause we believe in.

Don't we need gun laws?

Lets face it. The police do not prevent crimes, only try to find out who did them. History has demonstrated that a well armed population is a better deterrent to crime than gun control. Clintons own Justice Department released a study saying children who have been given, and taught to use, legal firearms by their parents are much less likely to be involved in any sort of crime, especially crimes involving guns.
