After UHS and a long wait, Maxwell released his second studio work, Embrya in 1998. It explored a new sound for him as well as new subject matter. Embrya is touted as a piece that masters a mix of the physical, sensual and spiritual aspects of Love.

Personal conflicts were cleared up in 1998, and Maxwell started his second U.S. tour, Live99, in Houston, Texas. Carried on the success of Embrya, which also went platinum, and a #1 single titled "Fortunate" that he performed for the Life movie soundtrack, Maxwell sold out 36 of 40 appearances with only one cancellation due to illness (Charlotte, NC).
