Notes for 37/0: From a fleet of 208 original 37/0 locomotives 135 were modified in a B.R. refurbishment program starting in 1985, the refurbished locomotives were reclassified into seven new 37/x sub classes. This left 173 unrefurbished locomotives which remained allocated as class 37/0. After completion of the class 37 refurbishment program a few of the 37/0 locomotives received new nose ends without headcode boxes or end connecting doors during overhaul to replace badly rusted or crash damaged nose ends, these locomotives retained their 37/0 classification.
Notes for 37/1: Some locomotives were fitted with new smooth nose ends. Some retained headcode boxes that were blanked over. Some retained nose end connecting doors but these were taken out of use and permanently sealed.
Notes for 37/3: Fitted with CP7 bogies recovered from scrapped Deltic locomotives and reclassified as 37/3. Some retained headcode boxes that were blanked over. Some retained nose end connecting doors but these were taken out of use and permanently sealed.
Notes for 37/4: Main 822/10G generators replaced with alternators. New CP7 bogies fitted. ETH modified for passenger train working. Retrofitted with ETS (Electric Train Supply) Some retained headcode boxes that were blanked over. Some retained nose end connecting doors but these were taken out of use and permanently sealed.
Notes for 37/5: Main 822/10G generators replaced with alternators. New CP7 bogies fitted. ETH modified for passenger train working. These locomotives were NOT fitted with ETS. Headcode boxes Removed. Some retained nose end connecting doors but these were taken out of use and permanently sealed.
Notes for 37/6: ETH through wired for use with generator cars. RCH jumper cables were added to enable multiple working. Vacuum brake systems were removed. Headcode Boxes Removed. (Modifications completed at Doncaster works)
Notes for 37/7: Ballast weights added to improve starting ability with heavy loads. Main 822/10G generators replaced with alternators. Headcode boxes removed although some retained headcode boxes that were blanked over. Some retained nose end connecting doors but these were taken out of use and permanently sealed.
Notes for 37/9: Ballast weights added to improve starting ability with heavy loads. Headcode boxes removed. 37901-904 received Mirlees Blackstone engines and 37905-906 received Ruston engines for development of class 38 locos which were never completed. 37/9 were nicknamed Slugs due to their slow starting ability on heavy train loads.
