There is substantial unrest throughout France , with socialist and communist uprisings being suppressed by the army and the pro-socialist prime minister General Sarrail attempting to negotiate with the leaders to find a peaceful settlement. An attempted monarchist uprising in Paris is put down brutally leading to international condemnation.
German reinforcements arrive in East Africa where Von Lettow-Vorbeck reclaims control of the colony, occupies the areas in the East ceded by Belgium, and leads an invasion of Portuguese Mozambique. German naval and marine units participate in the invasion.
The High Seas Fleet receives the latter two Mackensens (Furst Bismarck and Prinz Eitel Friedrich) ; construction of the Yorcks continues, and a new class (L20 Alpha - here named Deutschland) is laid down ; the other ships in the class are Preussen , Mecklenburg (where the 2 grand duchies have merged under one dynasty in 1918) and Braunschweig (where the duke has regained his estates after marrying the Kaiser's daughter in 1914)
Coronation of the Hesse-born King of Finland takes place in Helsinki ; later in the year the Wurttemburg-born King of Lithuania is crowned in Kaunas, capital of the new Greater Lithuania, very much under German control .
