s/s NORMADIE ( French Line) / USS LAFAYETTE (U.S. Navy Transport) Was launched
in 1935 - built by Chantiers and Ateliers in St. Nazaire, France. Designer
Vladamir Yourkevitch, developer of the bulbous bow. The first trip was May
29. 1935 and won the Blue Riband. The use of split boiler up-takes enlarged
the public spaces. Lavish Art Deco decor used thought
with paintings, scuplture and tapestry, all very elegant. To reduce
vibration, 4 blade propellers were installed. The last voyage before WWII
was August 23, 1939 to New York. The U.S. Government requistioned the vessel
on Dec. 12. 1941 for a troop ship. A fire occured on Feb.9.1942 which
destroyed the ship; salvaged and mothballed until 1946 sold for scrap.

R. M. S. Queen Mary ( Cunard White Star Line )
The keel was laid Dec. 27. 1930, then work was suspended until April 3.
1934. Launched on Sept. 26 1934, maiden voyage was May 27. 1936, won the
Blue Riband. Passenger capacity was 2,139 in cabin, tourist and third
class. She was equipped with an adjustable fresh air system for all areas.
Interior decor was designed by leading British artists. Requestioned
for troop ship service on March 1. 1940. She had a speed of 31.7 knots,
therefore didn't sail in convoys. Collided and sank the H.M.S. Curacoa on
Oct. 2. 1941. During WWII carried a record of 15,000 troops. Converted to
a passenger service and sailed on July 31. 1947 to New York. Withdrawn from
service on Oct. 31. 1967 and went to Long Beach, California to become
a Museum / Hotel Ship.

United States Lines Designed by Wm. F. Gibbs , built Newport News Ship
Builders, The maiden voyage of July 1952, was the last liner to win the
"Blue Riband". She was built for possible conversion to a troop ship with
defense features. Passenger capacity was 2000 in first cabin and tourist
classes. The ship was air conditioned. The staterooms and public areas in
U.S.hotel style. The U.S.government operating subsidy was suspended on July
1969 and was laid up.The ship was purchased Apr. 27, 1992 and towed to
Turkey for refitted as a Cruise ship. For lack of funds was returned in
1996 to Philadelphia and again laid up.
