TRANSFERABLE SKILLS

The survey, by Information Technology Association
of Nova Scotia and Human Resources Development Canada,
shows an anticipated
job growth in all sectors of the Information Technology or Knowledge Industry.
The opportunities are there, but there is a lack of skilled people to fill
the positions. Information technology positions like computer scientists,
computer engineers and system analysts are expected to be the three fastest
growing occupations through the year 2006. Employment of individuals
in the knowledge sector is expected to increase much faster than average
as technology becomes more sophisticated and organizations continue to
adopt and integrate these technologies.
What kind of people are employers looking
for to fill these positions? The survey says the top five attributes
of potential employees are: Positive attitude, Technical knowledge,
Willingness to Learn, Ability to work independently, and Communication
skills. Cohen in his book,Labour Shortages : As America Approaches
the Twenty- First Century, ranks computer engineers and computer
system analysts as the top two hottest jobs in America. Computer
repair ranks 18.
