Athames |
Every Witch has a personal knife. In many traditions it is called an athame (pronounced "a-tham-ay).
It usually has a steel, double-edged blade. The
size of the knife should be to suit yourself, choose whatever feels
comfortable to you.
The Athame is both a storer and a projector for power. You will use this to
gather energy and to cast your circle, to bless your food or drink, or to
gather herbs and other items that you intend to use for magickal/ritual
purposes. The athame can be used in place of a wand or sword so if you are
just beginning to collect your magickal tools, the athame will probably be
one of your first acquisitions.
In days of old, having a 'special' knife was a sure sign of witchcraft being
practiced. The witch would keep the knife with the rest of the household
knives except it would have something special marking it, perhaps a different
color handle or maybe the handle would be wrapped as though it were broken.
One way or another the knife was marked so that no one would use it except
for magical purposes. Today we can proudly display our athames. Take a look
