Crew Returns Diamonds Worth $38,000

Some people leave hangers or dishwasher soap behind when they move out of an apartment.

Former Steamboat Springs resident Laura Vannoy left $38,000 worth of unset diamonds.

But thanks to an honest cleaning crew, Vannoy is once again in possession of her valuables.

Darrel Levingston, Jenna Gracey, and Elizabeth Griffith were cleaning Vannoy's former home on Caribou Street at about 5p.m., Sunday, when they found the diamonds tucked in a kitchen drawer.

Levingston said he and his employees didn't think twice about returning the gems.  They called police immediately and turned over the precious stones.

"We go into people's homes on a daily basis, and people trust us with their prized possessions.  We knew right away we had to return them."

Although Levingston thought his actions were nothing special, public safety director J.D. Hays was impressed.

"It was unbelievable," Hays said.  "Every once in a while you hear about someone finding goods and turning them in, but to have three people of the same mind is pretty unique."

At the first city council meeting in August the three housekeepers will be honored for their honesty, Hays said.

The Associated Press contributed to this story.
