One of the five Confucian Classics, the I-Ching, or as it is commonly translated, the Book of Changes, is an oracle book, a philosophy, and a work of art. It has added immeasurable depth to the Chinese culture and is doing the same now for Western culture.

The I ching is composed of 64 hexagrams made up of six broken or solid (unbroken) lines, texts, and commentaries. The basic symbolic unit is a trigram. The maximum number of trigrams formed by various combinations of three lines, either solid or broken, is eight. By combining individual trigrams the hexagram is formed, the total possible being 64.

These lines, trigrams, and hexagrams symbolize the forces of action and change and all the phenomena of the universe. The I Ching is a theory of universe and humanity's place in the cosmic scheme of things. It is as meaningful now as it was in Confucius's day. It is a guide and a tool which, if used correctly, can eliminates doubts about present uncertainties, and which can provide vital clues to future trends. This knowledge will reduce the user's anxiety and restore confidence and valuable advantages in this age of uncertainty.

The I Ching is the crowning jewel of Oriental civilization. For over five thousand years, it has been a source of wisdom and inspiration for philosophy, politics, science, business, and even architecture. It has provided personal guidance in health, human relationships, travels, career paths, and social responsibilities. What the Bible is to the West, the I Ching is to the East.

The I Ching has always provided a world picture in which man is a creature of destiny, not controlled by blind fate. In ancient China, the numero-astrological reading of one's birth date was called Shi-Chu
( Four Pillars Astrology), which means the Four Columns or the Four Cornerstones of the Foundation.
