Web Page Tips for Kids

So, you have decided to do a web page

Cool!!

There are alot of places on the web to find out the "code" or "html" to making your page look great. These 3 are our favorites and seem to be the easiest to use:
Lissa's HTML Help for Kids
Web Pages for Absolute Beginners
How to Build a Better Website

When you first start looking at all the "codes"-it looks pretty scary. You may be thinking-"I can't do this"-- YES YOU CAN!!!! Hey, we did.

The first thing to do is to print out the basic instructions or "codes"-This will be your guide while you are doing it. If you dont have a printer just copy them the old fashoined way-with a pencil. :-)

At first you wont understand what all those "codes" mean but soon you will get the hang of it. What we like to do is to put our heading in first--then save the page. Then we go back to "edit text" and as we add something, we save it-then go back again. That way we can see what each "code" does and make sure we didn't leave something important out. Usually if your "code" didn't work it is because you left something out-like a " or a > or a / or a = .

Heck, we just stopped and saved-- and looked to see if we had just written everthing right.
If something didn't work right--don't worry, nothing is written in stone. You can allways go back and fix the problem.

COLORS

You will see in your "code" pages that it asks for a color of the text. You can write in basic colors like- red, blue, green, yellow, etc... If you want a fancier color you will need a color chart to get the "code" for that color. The one you are seeing now is--#8080ff.
The color chart we like to use is:
RGB Color Chart

Adding Graphics & Music--Giving Credit!!

So,now you have started your page, chosen your colors, written some words. Now for the fun part--adding graphics and music!! The "Golden Rule" to adding them is to give credit to the artists who created them. The instructions for doing this are usually on the artists web page but if you cant find it you can look in your "code" pages under: How to add a link. You can either give the artist credit on the page you are using their work or you can set up a Credits & Links page.
Check out our Links page for some really cool artists!!!
When you find a graphic or midi music you want to use just right click it and a save box will pop up. Click save as and be sure to write down the name of what you saved. Like-- mail.gif -- cow.jpg -- name of song.mid. When you go into your file manager-advanced-you will see a place to upload files. Click on browse and your download folder will pop up showing all the cool stuff you saved. Add them one by one to the upload list--then click upload. Now you can look in your "code" pages for the instructions on how to add graphics and music.

One really cool thing we just learned to do was to look at other peoples pages in "html". You can start by trying it on this page!
First-right click on our page(not on a picture),a little box should pop up-choose by left clicking-"view source".
You should be seeing all the codes on our page if you did it right. You can't change anyones code but you can see how they did what they did.
Notice the code that starts with--
-img src- --that is a code for putting up pictures on your page.
The one that starts with--
-a href- --is for links to other pages.
If you will look at the bottom of our page you will see a code that starts with--
-EMBED src- --that is the music code.

Well, this should get you started. We will be adding more later. Have fun and get creative!!!!!
