CENG-280 CONSTRUCTION SURVEYING

Credits: 3.00

Prerequisites: MATH 132. Offered in fall and spring. Principles of plane surveying; methods of measuring distances, angles and differences in heights (levels); traverse computations; setting out horizontal and vertical curves; earthwork computation; setting out engineering structures and construction projects.

 

CENG-302 STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS I

Credits: 3.00

Prerequisites: ENGR 212. Offered in fall and spring. Analysis of statically determinate structures under static loads; member forces in trusses, shear and moment diagrams, deflections, simple application of the matrix displacement method.

 

CENG-303 STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS II

Credits: 3.00

Prerequisites: CENG 302 and ENGR 229 or concurrent. Offered in fall and spring. Analysis of statically indeterminate structures by three-moment equation, the method of consistent deformation, slope-deflection, the moment distribution. Approximate analysis of statically indeterminate structures. Matrix force and displacement methods for beam and frame analysis. Computer application for structural analysis.

 

CENG-304 DES OF REINF CONC STRUC

Credits: 3.00

Prerequisites: CENG 303 or concurrent. Offered in fall and spring. Properties of concrete and reinforced concrete, behavior of composite sections, ultimate strength and working stress design of structural elements, beams, columns, one-way and two-way solid slabs, detailing of reinforcing steel.

 

CENG-311 FUND OF HYDRAULIC ENG

Credits: 3.00

Prerequisites: ENGR 261 and 312 (may be taken concurrently). Two class periods and one three hour lab period. Offered in fall and spring. Introduction to projects of water resources planning, pipelines and pipe networks, pumps, open channel flow, sediment transport, hydraulic structures, seepage and groundwater flow, dimensional analysis.

Prerequisites: ENGR 116. Offered in fall and spring. Role of the architect and other engineers in building construction. Architectural design fundamentals. Building components and materials. Architectural drawing and detailing.

 

CENG-323 CONST MAT&QUALTY CONTRL

Credits: 3.00

Prerequisites: ENGR 229 and CENG 324L concurrently. Offered in fall and spring. Types of construction materials and components. Concepts of quality control. Aggregates types, sources and quality. Inorganic cements. Concrete mix design, admixtures and quality control. Asphalt cement, aspahlt concrete mix design and quality control. Steel in construction. Masonry materials, timber, insulation materials and coatings.

 

CENG-324 CONSTRUCTION MATRLS LAB

Credits: 1.00

Prerequisites: ENGR 229 and concurrent CENG 323. Offered in fall and spring. Standard and quality control testing and measurement of aggregate, cement, concrete, asphalt, asphalt concrete and reinforcing steel. One three-hour laboratory period.

 

CENG-325 MECH ENGR IN CONSTRUCTION

Prerequisites: ENGR 261. Offered in fall and spring. Fundamentals of energy transformation and exchange systems. Sizing, matching and installation of electrical, mechanical, plumping, heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems.

 

CENG-331 GEOLOGY FOR ENGINEERS

Credits: 2.00

Prerequisites: CENG 280 or concurrent. Offered in fall and spring. Minerals and rock types, superficial deposits, interpretation of geologic maps, structural geology, geologic exploration, ground water cycle, geology of Egypt and greater Cairo.

 

CENG-403 DESIGN OF STEEL STRUCT

Credits: 3.00

Prerequisites: CENG 303. Offered in fall and spring. Concepts of elastic design of steel structures, type of loading, structural systems for buildings and bridges, elastic design and analysis of structural members, tension members, compression members, beams, columns, and connections.

 

CENG-411 SOIL MECHANICS

Credits: 4.00

Prerequisites: ENGR 229, 261. Offered in fall and spring. Index properties and engineering classification, composition and structure of soils; water flow in soil media; stresses in soil, stress-strain properties of soils; shear strength, and consolidation. Experimental measurement. Lab and field compaction. Fundamental problems of slope stability; methods of stability analysis. Three class periods and one three-hour lab period.

 

CENG-423 METH&EQUIP FOR CONSTR I

Credits: 3.00

Prerequisites: CENG 304 and 321 or concurrent. Offered in fall and spring. Site management. Techniques of building construction; methods, materials, tools and equipment; traditional, mechanized and prefabrication construction systems. Construction detailing. Selection, sizing, matching and operation of construction equipment. Two class periods and one three-hour field period.

 

CENG-424 METH&EQUIP FOR CONST II

Credits: 2.00

Prerequisites: CENG 423. Offered in fall and spring. Civil construction; methods, materials, tools and equipment; traditional and modern construction technologies. Evaluation and selection of appropriate construction technology. Value engineering. Sizing, operation and maintenance of construction equipment.

 

CENG-426 STEEL&CONCRETE BRIDGES

Credits: 3.00

Prerequisites: CENG 304 and 403. Offered occasionally. Types of bridges. Loads; dead, live, impact, wind and other loading. Basic design and construction of various types of bridges; truss, beam and plate girder, slab, box girder. Bearings and expansion details.

 

CENG-427 PREFAB,WATER&PREST CONC STRUCT

Credits: 3.00

Prerequisites: CENG 304. Offered occasionally. Prefabricated concrete; design methods, tolerance, floor and roof systems, wall panels and construction joints. Concrete water structures; design considerations and parameters, water tightness, construction of circular and rectangular tanks. Prestressed concrete; basic principles, methods and systems of prestressing, partial loss of prestressing, analysis and design for flexural, shear, bond and bearing.

 

CENG-428 BUILDING FINISHES

Credits: 3.00

Prerequisites: CENG 321, 423. Offered in fall. Construction details, materials selection, and methods of construction of building finishes: floors, walls, and ceiling; stairs, openings, installations, speciality works. Design/detailing project.

 

CENG-431 TRANSPORTATION ENGINEERING

Credits: 3.00

Prerequisites: ENGR 214 and CENG 323. Offered in fall and spring. Introduction to basic planning and engineering principles of various transportation systems; transportation planning tools, concepts of design and construction of highway and railway transportation facilities.

 

CENG-432 DESIGN OF IRRIGATION SYSTEMS

Credits: 3.00

Prerequisites: CENG 311. Offered occasionally. Irrigation project planning, irrigation water requirements, conveyance systems, traditional and modern irrigation systems (surface, sprinkle and trickle), drainage systems, irrigation and drainage structures.

 

CENG-441 INTRO TO CONT MGMT&COST ESTIMTNG

Prerequisites: ENGR 345, BADM 307. Offered in fall and spring. Introduction to construction management: participants involved, types of construction, project life cycle, contractual relationships and responsibilities, managerial functions. Estimating techniques and procedures: approximate estimating, quantity surveying, detailed estimating procedure, costing of labor, material, equipment, overhead costs, financing costs, cost recording and cost accounts.

 

CENG-442 CONST PROJ SP,BIDS&CONT

Credits: 3.00

Prerequisites: CENG 441. Offered in fall and spring. Participants in a construction contract, contract definition, formation principles of a contract, performance or breach of contract obligations, analysis and comparison of the different kinds of construction contracts, bidding logistics, legal organizational structures, different types and uses of specifications, international forms of contracts utilized in construction.

 

CENG-446 TECH OF PLAN,SCHED&CONTROL

Credits: 3.00

Prerequisites: CENG 441. Offered in fall and spring. Project definition and work breakdown structure, scheduling and control models and techniques. Resource allocation and leveling, optimal schedules, documentation and reporting, time and cost control, progress monitoring and evaluation. Computer applications.

 

CENG-448 FIN MGMT&ACCT IN CONST

Credits: 3.00

Prerequisites: CENG 442. Offered in fall and spring. Basic accounting terminology, financial statements, financial analysis, unique aspects of accounting for the construction industry, different methods of revenue and cost recognition, completed contract and percentage of completion methods, costs in excess and billing in excess, , financial control of construction projects, risk-return relationship, budgeting for construction projects.

 

CENG-449 SYS ANLYS FOR CONST ENG

Credits: 3.00

Prerequisites: ENGR 312, CENG 446. Offered occasionally. Introduction to the basic construction systems. The systems analysis approach; multi-objective problems. Decision analysis; decision making under uncertainty, risk aversion, utility function. Economic considerations for resource allocation; minimum cost model, maximum output model. Sensitivity analysis; changes in unit costs, changes in resource constraints. Information management systems.

 

CENG-452 STRUCT SYST&ADV DESIGN

Credits: 3.00

Prerequisites: CENG 304, 403. Offered in spring. Structural design process, structural performance criteria, choice of structural system, design topics for reinforced concrete and steel structures including: rigid frames, ribbed and flat floor system, torsion, biaxial bending, deflections, composite construction.

 

CENG-461 DES&CONS OF FOUND&RET STRUCT

Credits: 3.00

Prerequisites: CENG 411. Offered in fall and spring. Earth pressure theories; bases for design of retaining structures; types of foundations systems and design criteria; design of shallow foundations and deep foundations; construction methods; effects of construction of nearby structures.

 

CENG-462 APPL IN GEOTECHNICAL ENGR

Credits: 3.00

Prerequisites: CENG 461 or concurrent. Offered occasionally. Geotechnical analysis and design concepts applied to engineering projects: stability of natural and man-made soil and rock slopes, reinforced earth, deep soil stabilization, cofferdams, mat foundation, deep foundation under various loading conditions.

 

CENG-471 ENVIRNMENTL&SANITRY ENG

Credits: 3.00

Prerequisites: CENG 311. Offered in fall and spring. The biochemical cycles of synthesis and decay. Drinking water: collection, treatment, distribution and quality assurance. Domestic and industrial waste collection, treatment and disposal. Water pollution control. Air-quality and air-pollution control.

 

CENG-472 DES&CONST OF MARNE STRU

Credits: 3.00

Prerequisites: Senior standing. Offered occasionally. Wind, tides and wave mechanics, engineering oceanography, wave and current forces, design considerations for fixed and floating structures. Navigation aids and harbor planning. Design and construction of marine structures; breakwaters, shore protection, docking facilities.

 

CENG-480 SPEC PROB IN CONST ENG

Credits: 1.00 to 3.00

Prerequisites: Consent of instructor and department chair on the basis of a well-defined proposal. Offered in fall and spring. Independent study in various problem areas of construction may be assigned to individual students or groups. Readings assigned and frequent consultations held. May be repeated for credit if content changes.

 

CENG-481 DEV OF HIGHWAY FACILIT

Credits: 3.00

Prerequisites: CENG 431. Offered occasionally. Analysis of factors in developing highway transportation facilities, , traffic estimates and assignment, problems of highway geometric and design standards, planning and location principles, intersection design factors, structural design of pavement, highway maintenance.

 

CENG-490 SENIOR PROJECT I

Credits: 1.00

Prerequisites: Senior standing. Offered in fall and spring. A capstone project. Topics are selected by groups of students according to their area of interest and the advisors' approval. Projects address solutions to open ended applications using an integrated engineering approach.

 

CENG-491 SENIOR PROJECT II

Credits: 2.00

Prerequisites: CENG 490. Offered in fall and spring. A continuation of the capstone project. Topics of Senior project I are continued with emphasis on the technology and management aspects of construction.

 

CENG-494 SEL TOPICS IN CONST ENG

Credits: 3.00

Prerequisites: Senior standing. Offered in fall and spring. Specialized topics in construction engineering will be selected and presented.

 

CENG-497 INDUSTRIALTRAINING

Credits: 1.00

Prerequisites: Completion of 96 credit hours. Offered in fall. Each student is required to spend a minimum of eight weeks in industrial training in Egypt or abroad. A complete account of the experience is reported, presented and evaluated.
