Purpose: The purpose of this”game” is to teach nouns - specific names for people,
Materials: A tray full of “yellow things” - pencil, crayon, ball, eraser, comb, balloon,
lemon, smiley face, yarn, etc…
Steps: 1. Teacher will set the tray of “yellow things” on a table at the front of
2. Teacher will ask one student to, “Hand me the ‘yellow thing’” - the
student will choose 1 “yellow thing” and hand it to the teacher.
3. Regardless of which “yellow thing” is handed to the teacher, the
teacher will throw the “yellow thing” onto the ground and say: “Not
that - I said the ‘yellow thing’.”
4. The teacher will then say to another student, “Will YOU hand me the
‘yellow thing’?” When that student chooses a “yellow thing” and
hands it to the teacher, the teacher will throw it onto the ground.
5. This will continue until about the 4th or 5th “yellow thing” is chosen,
and it happens to be the RIGHT “yellow thing”.
6. By this point the students are frustrated and are usually making
comments, like, “Why didn’t you say what you wanted…” At this point the
teacher will direct the discussion towards SPECIFICITY!
