NIGHT FIGHTING SKILLS
Before we discuss night fighting in-depth remember that for airsoft a maglite/surefire torch and a tracer unit should really be used. When using real steels there will always be some sort of noticeable muzzle flash (simulated by the strobe in a tracer unit), actual tracer rounds and in CQB some sort of tactical light. Ok down to Business: - Night Vision with the Naked Eye The eye is funny optical instrument primarily designed for operating in good light with color definition. (Not good at Night) The primary focus of the eye is straight to the back of the retina where the Cones are situated, these have good color definition (in good light) and few Rods, which see in monochrome (not quite black and white) and are good in poor light. So to increase night vision focus just of to the side or above/below the suspect object by about 10 degrees so object falls on Rods not the Cones. The other drawback with Rods is that they are designed to be suseptical to movement (great when a suspect target is moving position or between cover, not good when he is static in good cover.) The Rods movement characteristics also leads to the other problem in that static object if observed to intensely appear to move. To over come this keep looking away and back again and if after repeated glances the object is still in the same rough area its probably just a tree or a static sniper. To increase definition of static objects use the look slightly of target method but focus round the target with snapshots of the image i.e. Look to the objects 7 o'clock for 10 secs then to 9 o'clock for 10 sec and round the clock. With practice this will build up a higher definition picture of the object and confirm wither it's a tree or that pesky sniper. With reference to the monochrome nature of the Rods they don't actually see in black and white but in shades of purple (hence the chemical in the Rods is known as night purple) so black does actual stand out more than dark blues and purples (Hence why the Americans designed that sassy blue version of the urban camo)but in poor light you standard Woodland DPM's will be fine.
