Named for its hilltop location overlooking a glen, the original house was constructed in 1838 by Judge Richard Johns Bowie, a local attorney who later became a state senator, U.S. Congressman, and eventually, chief judge of the Maryland Court of Appeals. The house was enlarged and the formal gardens added in 1926 by Dr. James Alexander Lyon and his wife, Irene Moore Smith Lyon.

The City of Rockville purchased 153 acres of the parkland including the Glenview Mansion in the late 1950s. Since that time, the City of Rockville has owned and operated the Mansion as a rental facility for social events, wedding receptions, birthday parties, fund raising events, and a wide variety of other types of social affairs.

Rockville's Glenview Mansion exudes all of the charm, grace, and style you would expect from an historic 19th century home. From the moment you open the mansion's front door, enter the spacious foyer, and see the grand staircase, you will be awed by the Glenview Mansion's beauty. Period furnishings, the marble-floored Conservatory, the wooden-paneled Dining Room, and ornamental fireplaces welcome you to experience one of Rockville's finest treasures. The second floor of the Glenview Mansion is home to theMansion Art Gallery.
