                     From 1846-1851 Thomas served in the Mexican War as an officer.  In spring of 51 Jackson was offered and accepted to teach at the Virginia Military Institute in Lexington,he resigned from the armyand reported to duty August 13, 1851.  He served on the VMI faculty as proffesor of natural and Experimental Philosophy & Artillery from August 1851 until the beginning of the Civil War in April 1861.
