Dr.Josef Mengele was born in Gunzburg, Germany in 1911.  He was the eldest of three sons.  He was refined, popular, intelligent, and very well liked in his home town.  He studied philosophy at Munich where he met Alfred Rosenburg and encountered his racial ideology.  He went on to study medicine at the University of Frankfurt, when he was done there he joined the Institute for Hereditary Biology and Racial Hygiene.  Mengele was an ardent Nazi and took the head doctor position at Auschwitz death camp to continue his research in hopes to find a way to make a super Aryan race.
At Auschwitz, Mengele had superior power not only was he the head doctor and performed gruesome experiments on many of the prisoners (Mainly Twins and Children), but he also had the power to with the flick of a cane send someone to the gas chambers.  As prisoners arrived he examined them to see who was fit for work and who was not. He then would flick his cane right (To the Gas Chambers) or to the left (To Work).  Mengele was responsible for killing 400,000 prisoners
The main purpose of his accepting the job at Auschwitz was to perform experiments in order for his cause to create the super race.  Mengele wanted badly a "pure" Aryan race.  Most of his experiments were with eye color.  He injected dye into many jewish children's eyes in order to try to make them blue. Most of these experiments ended in complete blindness for it's victims.  Other experiments were done to help the German Army.  Here's an example, prisoners were placed in vats of ice water, naked, to find the lowest temperature the body could withstand.  People were also locked outside, in snow and ice, to collect more data on temperatures.  Dr. Mengele would lock prisoners in pressure chambers to simulate on pilot's flying at high altitudes.  He would record the prisoners vital statistics until they died.
In 1945 the Nazi's destroyed the gas chambers and crematoriums and also the pathology lab where Mengele performed his experiments.  Most of his records were destroyed, so we may never know the full horror of all his experiments.
Mengele fled Auschwitz disguised as a member of the German Infantry.  He was captured by the Allies but they did not know who they had in their midst.  Mengele moved from country to country in fear of being caught.  There were many warrants, bounties, and rewards issued but he was never caught.
In 1979, Mengele, living in Brazil, went for a swim and during this swim in the ocean he suffered a massive stroke and began to drown.  By the time he was brought ashore he was dead.  That is just one story though.  Another is that some scientists stumbled onto the bones and after studied, they showed that they were Mengele's.  It is kind of a mystery to which is right and so some people still believe to this very day that  Mengele is still alive!
