9. TRADITIONAL THAI MASSAGE

Ms Carol J van der Berg

Self-Development Trainer

Thai massage concentrates on 10 main energy lines in the body. Massaging these points makes it possible to treat certain diseases, or at least provide some relief. Disruptions in the flow of energy result in an insufficient supply of life energy which, in turn, can lead to sickness or pain. Working on the energy lines with Thai massage can break the blockages, stimulate the free flow of energy and help restore general well-being. In traditional Thai massage, emphasis is placed on stretching and applying pressure to energy points.

In Western terms, Physiotherapy and Chiropraktic are nearer to Thai massage than the Swedish form, but neither of these techniques utilises the energy points and flow of the body to the same extent; Reflexology is closer to Thai massage in terms of theory and technique as it, too, works on energy points.

This short introductory course will give a general overview to Traditional Thai Massage and students will gain sufficient knowledge and practice to be able to give a Thai massage:

1st Lesson: Feet and Legs 3rd Lesson: Neck and Back

2nd Lesson: Body Front and Arms 4th Lesson: Head and Face

Participants remain fully-clothed during Thai massage. Students are requested to wear loose clothing and to bring a folding mattress- and a friend!

Very popular during Victorian times, the craft of pressing flowers is today re-gaining its popularity, not only in the UK but also in USA and Japan.

At the first session you will learn the basics of the craft - when and what to pick, how to press, storage and design etc. When you return a few weeks later, you will create your own cards, picture or gift with the flowers you've pressed since the first evening.

Flowers can be pressed between telephone directories or under books if you don't want to buy a press, but a press does give a better result, especially with slightly thicker flowers, and it does take up less space. Presses can be made to order at R38.00 each and must be ordered and paid for at the time of registration. Blotting paper will be on sale at R1.50 per sheet.

Please bring notepad and pen to the first session as you will then be advised of items to bring for the second session.

20. ARCHAEOLOGY & EVERY-DAY LIFE

 Dr Anthony Humphreys

Many people think that archaeology is a harmless study of ancient life - perhaps a luxury that is not really relevant in our modern world. In this course we will look at what archaeology has to teach us about ourselves here and now. There is nothing new under the sun, whatever the media try to tell us, and in some ways we might even have regressed. We will certainly find that we are perhaps not quite as 'with it' as we think ....

There will be four illustrated sessions:

* Archaeology and Consumerism

* Archaeology and Biomedicine

* Archaeology and the Good Life

23. FEEL THE FEAR AND DO IT ANYWAY :

Ms Carol J van der Berg

WORKSHOP Self-Development Trainer

Does fear stop you from being the person you want to be and living your life the way you want to live it? Turn fear and indecision into confidence and action to proactively create a more whole life.

We explore what we think and believe - aiming for releasing limiting, habitual thought patterns. This is often the impetus needed to push through our fears and ultimately achieve our heart's desire.

We use the exercises in Susan Jeffers's book, either in the group or individually

With the group's support, we investigate new possibilities for our own lives.

On an individual level, we examine different areas in our lives and proactively create a more "whole life". (This is very empowering.)

Aims of the workshop:

To recognise our own fears

To develop our own strategies for dealing with our fears

To claim our fears as our own and see them as potential for change.
