Continuing Education Programme
The Pinelands High Continuing Education Programme started in the second term of 1988. It was the brainchild of the principal of the time, Mr Colin Thomson, and operated initially under a sub-committee of the Parent Teachers' Association. From its inception the programme has been co-ordinated by Mrs Ann Strybis (tel 021 5311513), assisted by Mrs Evol Engelbreght and for a number of years by Mrs Lee Clayton. Mr Barwise, from the educator body, is also involved. The CEP offers courses in the following fields: arts and crafts, language education, skills such as computer skills, DIY and general interest. The programme is operated as a community service and is a form of fundraising for the school. Over the years it has provided funds for numerous projects such as purchasing computer equipment, tuckshop equipment, new carpeting for the library, a potter's wheel and kiln for the Ceramics Department, various television sets, overhead projectors and security lights for the school. It is run separately from the school with its own bank account, set of books, etc. Ann and her assistants work mainly from home, except during registration time. Some courses are very popular and are on-going, such as courses on computers, calligraphy, biblical archaeology, Spanish, water colours, fabric painting and decoupage. The programme offers a wide range of hobbies such as making bobbin lace, teddy bear making, acrylic painting on ceramics, cake icing, chocolate making, baking, gardening, flower arranging, Indian cooking, microwave cooking, dress designing, sewing and wardrobe planning. A brochure advertising the various courses, dates and costs is available from the School or phone Mrs Strybis. It is also possible to be placed on a mailing list - contact Mrs Strybis.
