Pinelands High SchoolNewsletter - No 1
Dear Parents/Guardians I wish you all a very prosperous year. I am very pleased with the manner in which this school year has commenced and am very optimistic about the year ahead. I trust that parents/guardians who are new to PHS will soon feel very much at home at the school. I also hope that this group of parents/guardians will avail themselves of the opportunity to find out more about PHS by attending the meeting in the Kent Hall at 19:00 on Monday 31 January. Parents/Guardians of Grade 8 learners will meet relevant class tutors during the course of the evening. Please fill in the relevant portion of the reply slip in order to assist us with catering. Staff newsWe welcome the following new members of staff: Mr Nazeem Edwards (Head of Science) Mr Neil Eddy (Head of Mathematics) Ms Isabel Muller (Art - Painting) Ms Sune Stassen (Textile Design) Mr Achmat Geyer (D & T/Woodwork) Mr Rory Sanders (Music) Mrs Pam Buttle (Network Administrator) Mr Ian Junor (School Administrator) Ms Mary Redford (Teacher Assistant) Ms Sarah Norris (Teacher Assistant) Medical formsPlease give serious consideration to the offer of Medical Insurance that accompanies this newsletter. The school itself does not have a policy that covers your child in the event of injury at school. While we do all that we can to ensure your child's safety, accidents sometimes occur and we have had parents who have regretted not taking out extra cover.Golf dayPlease note the details of the Circular advertisingthe forthcoming Golf Day organised by the PTA.
Traffic/parking arrangementsI request that all parents/guardians obey traffic signs around the school. I am appalled by the poor example set by many drivers when learners are dropped off at school in the mornings or picked up after school. Apart from the chaos caused in the process, I believe that lives are endangered. This is particularly true when cars stop in the very busy Forest Drive to allow learners to jump out. I will be asking traffic authorities to monitor the situation and will encourage them to fine those who break the law.Extra-Afrikaans teachersWe are keen to build up a data-base of people who are able and willing to give extra-lessons, particularly extra-lessons in Afrikaans. Please contact Mrs Lucinda van Rooyen at school with relevant information.PrizegivingOur junior prizegiving function takes place on Thursday evening, 3 February, at 19:00 and gives us the opportunity to celebrate the academic successes of our learners. Attendance at this function is compulsory for all Grade 9-12 learners. Please refer to the accompanying letter.Learner achievementsCongratulations to the following learners:Marc Macaskill, chosen to represent South Africa at the European Junior Ice Hockey Championships that take place in Bulgaria later this year. Meagan Manzoni, representing WP at the SA National Development Aquatic Championship. Carl Wastie, taking part in Romeo and Juliet at Maynardville. Please keep the school informed about your child's achievements. It is good to celebrate our learners successes together with them. Kind regards Dave Arguile
