One of the ways we do this is via the Quality Circles. Quality Circles ...
Mission Statements
Each Quality Circle has a mission statement which guides its operation. When the mission is achieved, the Quality Circle could close. The Academic Quality Circle

What we do:
The Arts Quality Circle oversees all the societies in the school. We look for ways in which to improve the cultural life of the school. We also help where we can with organisation of cultural events in the school. The school has a thriving cultural portfolio. The Wind Orchestra, Jazz Band Choir, Marimba Bands, Cabaret group and African Sounds (a dance group) all cater for the musical members of the school. We also have a Debating Group, big Christian Union and Muslim Students Association, Interact, Outdoor club, Chess Club. This year saw the introduction of several new ventures - the Poetry, History and Film Societies. The School newspaper has been resurrected and promises good things for the year. The lengthened Tuesday second break has been a great success with societies meeting regularly. This year saw the introduction of an entrepreneurial endeavour – a market day is held once a month – with the learners peddling various wares and most of them make a profit. This year some of the issues we will be discussing include: the revamping of the colours awards for cultural activities, cultural activities for the York exchange, keeping the societies up to date on the webpage, how to get the junior grades more informed and involved in the the societies on offer here at Pinelands High School.
AFRICAN SOUNDS by V Rengqe
African Sounds is a group of Pinelands High students. The teens meet every Wednesday at 1:30pm until 3 o’clock for practices. We are coached by experienced African dancers. Africa Sounds is all about exploring African cultures and songs (amagwijo) and dancing (umxhenso) – notions which are integral to African life. African Sounds was started by a Mrs Matyolo who had a vision for the African students of the school. She spoke to a couple of students who thought the idea was brilliant. Word spread, people joined and today African Sounds is a reality.
Choir Mistress: Ms. Jos Taylor Accompanist: Mrs. Sally Derman We are not your average choir that sings songs that were written by dead people. We are also not a choir that sings opera. No, we are a choir that sings music form recent movies and the likes thereof.
We are performing at the Nassau Centre at Groote Schuur High School on 12 May 2000 and in the third term we will be joining up with the Rondebosch Boys High School Choir. For more information watch this space or give PHS a call.

Marimba Band
The Pinelands High School Marimba Band was founded in 1996 by Ms Kathy Stinson - who was on the Music staff from 1996-1999. (She recently left PHS to join her husband who is studying in England for a couple of years). Over the last three years it has excelled and grown, making a name for itself in the Pinelands Community. The band is being run by Mr Rory Sanders, a new teacher in the PHS music department, and trained by Gavin Coppenhall. The band has brought a touch of African spirit to the school, adding another layer to the school's diverse culture. Names of the members: Kerry Nash Sean Drummond Lindsay Pursch Marisa Heyns Ashley Robbins Andrew Graham Chantal Mbana Nicky Justus The interest in the marimba band has been so great that a Junior band was started last year. They are already showing great promise.
DEBATING SOCIETY:
Debating is all about having a chance to express yourself through words.
For each debate we get a topic on which we have to talk. We cannot choose whether we are for or against the topic. So debating is mostly about arguing about things that you don’t necessarily believe in. It is unfortunate that only 3 people can be chosen to take part in each debate. There are so many learners, mostly juniors, who want to do debating that the team changes every time to give more people a chance. Debating is a great way to improve your self-confidence and improve your public speaking. It is such fun researching a topic, writing the speeches and then speaking on the night. I hope that it carries on at Pinelands High. Who knows what great Parliamentarian speakers PHS might hold! Emma Ballantyne
The History Society:
The History society was started this year with the aim of creating awareness in the school about History. This includes having history announcements around public holidays and drawing the learners’ attention to why we honour these days. The History Society hopes to host speakers of particular reference to our school and education in general during the course of the year. As a new society we are still forming an activities list for the year, events that we hope to have during the year are a history day at school, as well as a parachute debate.
The committee is for 2000 is: Chairperson: Ezran Lategan Vice Chairperson: Basri Allie Secretary: Naseema Parker PRO: Sanjieva Reddy and Uzair Stellenboom Treasurer: Shereen Welcome to the Outdoor Club
Our mission statement: "To give our learners the experience of a lifetime" We strive to make the Outdoor club one of the best social recreational activities at our school. We believe in fun and at the same time a process of learning. What does the Outdoor Club actually do? We try to enhance pupil relations by organising outdoor activities in the form of hikes, camps, rock climbing etc. We try to teach pupils Outdoor skills and show them the beauty of nature which this country has to offer. The outdoor club has several exciting outings planned for this year. Our first outing is a camp under the stars at BeaverLak from 10 – 12 March. We also intend having more camps as well as hikes and rock climbing, etc. during the course of the year. As usual an Outdoor Club Happening is planned for the June/July holidays. We are grateful to Mr Larsen and Mr Barwise for all their help and enthusiasm.
Muslim Students Association
Assalaamoe Alaykoem Waragmatoellah Wabarakatoe. The Muslim Students Association (MSA) is an organisation which is still in it’s teething stages, though we are proud to have been involved in a number of worthwhile activities in 1999, and hope to be involved in many more in 2000.Our activities in 1999 included praise and worship sessions (Thikr), leadership opportunities, fund raising events and particularly our main focus – charity related functions. The first MSA camp was held in February. It was in fact a working camp, where we brainstormed visions, objectives, plans, activities, and programmes for the MSA. In June we participated in the KTV Market Day at the Good Hope Centre. This was most definitely the biggest event on the MSA calendar, requiring tremendous planning, and organising of both learners and parents. It presented an opportunity to promote both Pinelands High School and the MSA. In addition, we also developed leadership and entrepreneurial skills. In June we also had a "Youth Day," where we entertained 120-orphaned children at the SOS Village. In June the MSA facilitated an outing for 60 orphans of SOS Village, Habibia Children’s Home, Beitun-Nur Children’s and Beitul Amaan Home. This started out as a special train ride on an educational excursion to the SA Naval Museum in Simons Town. Since it was Whale week at the time, the staff of the Edutrain organised an educational talk on whales, and a drawing competition of whales. Judging from the compliments and positive comments that were received, we can conclude that the 98/99 committee’s projects were a success. 99/2000 Committee In June 1999, a new committee was elected, the third committee of the MSA since it’s establishment. The committee (Shereen Wagiet, Waleed Ackers, Zulpha Abrahams, Siyaam Ally, Nazreen Hassen, and Ridwaan Nordien), aim to keep the morale and objectives of the MSA in the year of 2000.

The School Newspaper
The school newspaper has been revived from dormancy for the year 2000. At the moment it is nameless as we are still looking for a suitable name for it. Our slogan for the newspaper is: for the pupils, by the pupils. We want to address issues relevant to the school, report on happenings in and around the school as well as topics that interest teens. The paper is run largely by Grade 11 learners, with 2 Grade 10’s and one matric learner adding youth and age respectively to the committee. The Sports Quality Circle
