Here's bunch of music I like. obviously!
Jars of Clay (self titled, Much Afraid) [my fan page!] has a cool pop-rock style with acoustic guitars, very classic. The lyrics deal with deep topics, and come from a Christian perspective. Their second album is softer and more electric guitars, not as intense. "it takes more than your saline eyes to make things right." "a rose could never lie about the love it brings."
Tori Amos (Little Earthquakes, Boys for Pele, Under the Pink) has great lyrics, mostly about girly type things that teenagers can really relate to, like popularity and stuff. She has this cool, unusual voice, though some critics say she sounds like the Little Mermaid on acid. When Tori heard about it, she laughed and said it was probably true. She has played the piano since she was two years old and it really shows up in her albums. I cant wait to get her new cd!! "holding on to his picture, dressing up every day.."
Paula Cole (Harbinger, This Fire) has powerful voice, does a lot of different things with it, going really low and mellow or high and sweet. Her second album is very different from her first and a lot better, much less cookie cutter. My fave songs are This Fire, I Dont Wanna Wait, and Where Have All The Cowboys Gone. Where Have All The Cowboys Gone is soooo true!! "Ive left Bethlehem, I feel free, Ive left Bethlehem, Im not the girl I was supposed to be.."
Sheryl Crow (Tuesday Night Music Club, Sheryl Crow, Globe Sessions) has a folkish sort of rock style and sweet husky voice. My fave cd by her is the self titled one, I like all the songs on there!! Its also her most rock-ish one, the rest are more folky. I like All I Wanna Do and I Shall Believe from her first cd, and My Favorite Mistake from her latest one. "when you go all I know is your my favorite mistake.."
Dave Matthews Band (Under the Table and Dreaming, Crash, Before these Crowded Streets) is great band from South Africa with jazzy bluesy folk rock music. Their lyrics are so sweet! I love Satellite, Crash, Stay and Crush. "makes ya wanna stay, stay, stay for a while.."
Beatles (various anthologies) are the classic rock group- my favorites forever! No one can even come close! Their music is still cool after such a long time, they remain the true inspiration of pop. "come together, right now, over me"
Third Eye Blind (self titled) is a rock group with some kinda rap-ish thingies in it. I like Semi-charmed Life and Hows it Gonnna Be. Stephen Jenkins is such a cutie! "I want something else to get me through this semi-charmed kinda life, baby"
Bjork (Homogenic) is an Icelandic singer with pretty, surreal, synthetic music. Even the cover is neato, Bjork is dressed as a Japanese geisha girl, with a metallic silver background, spangled with delicate blue blossoms. Her lyrics are odd but cool- she writes them in Icelandic and then translates into English. My favorite songs are Joga and All Neon Like. "emotional landscapes, they puzzle me.."
Tracy Chapman (Tracy Chapman, Crossroads) was one of my dads favorite singers. At first I hated her voice because I thought it sounded too much like a guys but I like it now that I got used to it. A low alto, she sings about the working class and race struggles in the inner city, but dreams about peace. I like Fast Car, Behind the Wall and For my Lover. "you got a fast car, I got a plan to get us out of here..."
Bush (Razorblade Suitcase) another typical rock/ alternative band where the cute guy is the singer. um. what else can I say? "drink life as it comes, straight no chaser.."
Sarah McLachlan (Fumbling towards Ecstasy, Surfacing) is the founder of Lilith Fair, a celebration of women in music. She has that Lilith-y folky rock style matched up with a sweet serene voice.
Alanis Morissette (Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie) is from the 90s bitch movement, with people like Meredith Brooks (cringe) and Fiona Apple and stuff.. pretty good lyrics and stuff, shes really creative and different at least, trying new stuff.. Her first two albums were awful! kind of this terrible pop music, but now shes cool.. "thnak you India, thank you terror, thank you disillusionment.."
Fiona Apple (Tidal) has a sultry husky voice that at first doesnt seem to fit someone so young Her poetic lyrics deal with rape, love, suspicion and guys youd wanna dump in two seconds flat. I like Sleep to Dream and Never is a Promise the best. "he washed me shore and took my pearl, and left an empty shell of me.."
Jewel (Pieces of You, Spirit) is another folky rock star with earnest pro-girl lyrics. I like Foolish Games, Im Sensitive, Daddy, You Were Meant for Me and Hands. "we are everyday angels.."
Blur (Park Life, Blur) is the band that elevated brit pop to an art form! They go easily from beatles-esque to rock. They talk about love and middle class struggles. Damon Albarn is a hottie! My fave songs are Song 2, Park Life, End of a Century, Bad Head, Country Sad Ballad Man and Youre So Great. The last song is sooo sweet! and its sung by the guy whos usually the drummer, not Damon Albarn. "well I might as well just grin and bear it, cuz its not worth the trouble or an argument, and in any case Id rather bear it, its like a bad head in the morning..."
Lisa Loeb (Tails, Firecracker) has a sweet lil girl type of voice. Her cool cats eye glasses make a statement for geeks everywhere! I like Stay, Do You Sleep and something from firecracker. "you say I only hear what I want to, you say I talk so all the time. So..."
Silverchair (Frogstomp) is a typical alternative grunge band from down under. Im only familiar with Frogstomp, but I heard Freakshow bites, so thats okay... its cool, its cool. I like the first three tracks and Suicidal Dreams. "I know ya hate me, but Ill ask ya anyway..."
Presidents of the United States of America (Pure Frosting) are the best!! lyrics are soo funny, with all their crazy rhyming. Kinda punk/ rock sound, cheerful and upbeat. It totally stinks that they broke up! "video killed the radio star.."
