Sense and Sensibility

Sense and Sensibility is one of my favorite movies, partly because of Jane Austen's timeless story, and the amazing performances by Emma Thompson and Kate Winslet. It is the story of the Dashwood sisters and their mother, who are left penniless after their father's sudden death when their stepbrother inherits everything. The two main characters are the elder sisters, passionate Marianne, and sensible Eleanor.

The two sisters both fall in love, Eleanor for the sensitive, quiet Edward, and Marianne for Willoughby, a dashing handsome guy. However, Edward turns out to be engaged, and Willougby leaves Marianne for a rich woman. Marianne becomes ill, and Eleanor fears she will lose her beloved sister. But, it all ends happily- Marianne recovers, and meets the right guy (Colonel Brandon) and Edward's snotty fiance ditches him, leaving him free to marry Eleanor.

Since the Dashwoods are poor, they dress more plainly than Emma, whose costumes I loved, but the beautifully green English scenery in the movie makes up for it. The acting is very subtle and convincing, especially by Eleanor when she fears Marianne will die. Emma Thompson plays a very reserved person who doesn't show her emotions, so seeing her break down and actually cry is very moving *sniff* Good movie.
