Do you live in Bedfordshire?

Then become a member of the Bedfordshire Reptile & Amphibian Group. Annual membership fee is £5.00, payable to BRAG.

BEDFORDSHIRE:-

  1. Has a colony of the rare Natterjack Toad,
  2. is one of the European strongholds of the Great Crested Newt,
  3. probably has lots of grass snakes – we need to know,
  4. at last has a heathland re-creation plan
  5. is the English home of the (introduced) midwife toad.

Formed in May 2000, the aims of the group are:-

  1. conservation of the native species of reptiles and amphibians and their habitats in Bedfordshire;
  2. surveying and monitoring species of reptiles and amphibians in Bedfordshire, including introduced species;
  3. encouraging an interest in reptiles and amphibians and their conservation and developing the skills of those interested in them;
  4. advising statutory and non-statutory organisations and the general public about reptiles and amphibians and their habitats.

The Wildlife Trust Tel (01234) 304213 Undertake site specific management projects to safeguard threatened species and habitats, also provide opportunities for people to become involved in and educated about their natural environment. Wildlife Watch is run as the junior branch of the Wildlife Trust.

North Chilterns Trust Tel (01582) 412225 (formerly Chiltems Initiative) A partnership Countryside Management Project covering 120 square miles of southern Bedfordshire, including the urban areas of Luton and Dunstable and surrounding Chiltern Hills. Offer support, advice and practical help to partners, private and corporate landowners and community conservation groups.

The Greensand Trust Tel (01234) 743866 A Countryside Management Project on the 'Greensand' ridge from Leighton Buzzard to Ampthill. Includes community Involvement, recreation, access, archaeology and landscape.

Forest of Marston Vale Tel (01234) 767037 Environmental enhancement and community development and involvement in the Marston vale.

Landscape 2000 Tel (01234) 228063 Working with rural and urban communities within a four mile radius of St Neots to improve the quality of landscape, wildlife and public access.

Ivel Valley Countryside Project Tel (01767) 601042 improving the environment, landscape and wildlife, and public rights of way in the Ivel Valley.

Local authorities Countryside/Environment, teams have long been working with communities and the have a role to involve local people in the countryside and its management.
