Greg Ruth -ABS 98R
Champion Breeder and Exhibitor

Greg is actively involved in the budgie fancy. He is a member of the national club, ABS, and of several clubs in Southern California. These include: his local club, the Budgie Fanciers of San Diego County, a life member of the American Budgerigar Society, Great Western Budgerigar Society, and the San Gabriel Valley Parakeet Association.

Pointing out a few of the quality birds that might make the difference at his next show, Greg hopes these are the ones.
He has been involved with the breeding aspect since 1984 and within a short time joined the local club to learn as much as he could. As time went on, he developed an interest in exhibiting. The exhibiting did not begin until 1991. Greg moved from the Novice Division to the Intermediate Division in 1996. Most recently Greg earned the rights and privileges of competing at the Champion by winning his third and final leg at the Great Western Spring Classic in April of 2000. Greg is competing as a Champion with some reservation. He believes that his birds are very competitive at the Intermediate level, but still has a ways to go to really exhibit at the Champion level and actually win a spot on the top ten. Of course, this is how he felt when he began competing as a Novice. As time goes on, Greg's birds will become competitive on that Champion bench.

Greg has taken an active role with his local club. He has held the office of President, Program Chairperson, Publicity Chairperson, Show Chairperson, Membership, and Vice President. To assist with the shows, he first participated as a Steward's assistant. Over the past several years he has been show manager, show secretary, and has been producing the show catalogue continually for the past six years. He was the show manager for the American Budgerigar Society's national show, the 1998 All American.

Since 2000 Greg took the position of District Director of District 10 for the American Budgerigar Society. District 10 includes Southern California, Arizona, Nevada, and Utah. He has also volunteered to assist with the publication of the ABS Bulletin by producing the center section insert.

Greg has a relatively small breeding setup. He has had up to just over 300 birds in his aviary, about 150 too many. He tries to maintain between 80 to 120 birds for breeding; also too many since he is limited to having twenty-two breeding cages (this may seem as though it it many, but many is a relative term, several breeders have as many as 50 breeding cages and a few have 100 breeding cages. He has two flights, a four foot by eight foot flight and a four foot by sixteen foot flight. He does have birds for sale at reasonable rates. His show stock is made up of the standard varieties within the green and blue series. Some of the other varieties he favors include: violets, lutinos, yellows and whites. He is in the process of starting to breed for Laced Clearbody.

A majority of his purchased birds that led to his moving from Novice to Intermediate are from the line of Watkins/Miller. As the quality of his birds improved, he purchased birds as outcrosses from Bill and Merlyn Porter, Terry Travis, and Bob Whitham. With these outcrosses he has continued to be successful at the Intermediate level. Since Greg now has the three legs towards Champion and is competing as such, check out some of the stock he uses for show and for breeding.

Greg also has a page for birds that he has decided to sell. If you are interested in purchasing some birds, consider visiting Bird Sales. The birds on this page are thumbnails and can be enlarged for a better view. The price for any of these birds can be determined by looking at your location bar. The birds are in folders or directories according to their price. (i.e. A bird priced at $40 is in the 40 folder. The location bar would read: http://www.fortunecity.com/greenfield/fatcat/621/40/479-2gy.jpg) Please remember that the colors will vary depending upon the settings of your monitor.

Greg has created some pages to share some of the techniques he uses in his program. Visit any or all of this pages. Please let him know your experiences so that these pages will be as informative and accurate as possible. He is always open to new suggestions that will help himself and others in our hobby.
If you have any comments or questions, feel free to send a note to Greg as he is always happy to help.
Greg's professional life is teaching at the middle school level. He is now team teaching with the science department, Applied Physics where the students build the project that proves the Physics concepts. He also teaches a web design class (if you need someone to make a web page, please contact him.), and he is responsible for the school yearbook.

At one time he was also actively involved as a general contractor and builder. This Applied Physics class has provided Greg with an opportunity to learn and do many new and interesting projects for the club and personal life..
