Hiking in The Grand Canyon
Me (Ena) at Phantom Ranch Steve had to work all day Friday (October 22nd), so I took advantage of this opportunity to do a long hike in the Canyon. Steve dropped me off at the head of the South Kaibab trail and I hiked down to Phantom Ranch. After a break at Phantom, I hiked along the Colorado River and then back up the Bright Angel trail to the top.
The South Kaibab can be extremely hot and dry, and is not recommended for summer hiking (at least not during the heat of the day); however, it offers much better views (in my humble opinion), than the Bright Angel. I started down at 7:37 AM and was topside a little after 5:00 PM. Hiking Down the South Kaibab Trail
Ena in Front of O'Neill Butte Phantom Ranch was originally known as Rust's Camp but was renamed Roosevelt Camp after the President visited there. It was finally named Phantom Ranch for a small stream in a side canyon. Mary Jane Colter designed many of the buildings at Phantom, as well as Hermit's Rest, Desert View, Hopi House, and the Bright Angel Lodge.
