The art of Taijiquan is one of China's greatest treasures originating out of a profound ancient philosophy. Taijiquan is an activity which cultivates both the body and the mind. It is soft in form, but hard in application. Yang style Taijiquan is the most popularly practiced style of Taijiquan in the world today. Over the last several decades Taijiquan has been extensively researched in terms of its healing properties both in China and abroad. Some of this research has shown that Taijiquan plays an important role in strengthening the physical body, improving mental functions, and increasing life expectancy.
In terms of the combative application of Taijiquan, it is one of the most useful and more deadly types of fighting arts. Even though the movements appear to be slow and without application, there is a hidden intent within the style which comes out during practice. Each movement contains numerous self-defense applications which can be used either defensively or offensively. By practicing the movements in a slow and even paced manner, the Taijiquan practitioner will develop great strength, flexibility, coordination, and control. Training is conducted to make all movements connect to the ground and controlled in the waist. When the body is able to connect into a complete entity, the generation of internal strength will manifest. |
