Is anybody else having trouble getting onto the Dragonsworn board? I can't seem to "find" it.

Tom R. it looks like i'm not offended by anything this Chirstmas. So no thunder and lightning from me:-)

In fact, and this is a scary thought for you Dragonsworn crowd, I have thought about popping over to your board a few times. But I seem only to be reminded of that idea when I hear you talk about it having crashed again. C'est la vie.

Sorry folks, Im not going to run a WOT board.
(I dont run the WOT section in dragonsworn).

My personal opinon is that WOT is now far inferior to ASOIAF, and I barely have enough time to run
ASOIAF boards :D!

Besides, there are plenty of WOT boards around...

Here!!! I'm here!!!!

*Returning to at least some normalcy*

Poor Dragonsworn board. :( It was a nice place. Rev, I for one, will never urge you to begin a WOT board. I despise WOT.

That being said and done, I'm off to read some Patricia McKillip & "Daughter of Time" (which I recently bought with my Christmas money!!! -- I'm a great fan of all the misunderstood monarchs, Richard III & "Bloody" Mary included.)

What the heck? Where is that silly board? I was all excited to catch up, start some down and dirty flame wars, and to officially declare my allegience to the Dragonsworn board and then it goes down so completely and pathetically?!?

Sheesh. That means that I'm stuck here. I liked the other board and being able to post questions like "Does anyone think that Jon is Lyanna's kid?" without getting the "We already discussed that in 23 separate threads back in 1997" response.

;) <--- and look at the pathetic winking face we have to use here! **groan**

**looks around at all of the ASoIAF geniuses and scholars that reside here, instantly feels inferior again, returns to her comfy chair, and whips out a nice, simple Grisham novel**

P.S. Also reading Patricia McKillip - Song for the Basilisk :) BTW - when is the next disaster in that WOT series gonna be out? I could use a new doorstop.

Well, I still like Jordan. I mentioned adding the WOT stuff to this board because I believe that this board is the best in the world, has the best people, the most intelligent people (99.9%), best organization, etc. . .

Leave it to me to want to have the market cornered on the coolest Message Boards. I just thought that adding a WOT section would add more people to the boards, more ideas. Plus it would introduce Jordanites unfamiliar with Martin to ASOI&F.

Geez, why does everyone bite on Jordan anyway. You guys sound like Siskel and Ebert. If I'm not mistaken, Jordan has still outsold Martin, and Martin has a long way to go before catching up. Can't we all just get along.

Jordan's second novel wasn't a bestseller. In fact, I don't believe he hit the bestseller list until the fourth novel.

Of course Jordan has outsold Martin overall, and of course his last two (or maybe three) books sold better than a CoK .. but he's been building up a following over Ghu knows how many years. Martin's only started. ;)

I think WOT has gone downhill since book 4. RJ seems to to have lost momentum. With as many pages as he puts out you'd think his books would cover more than a week or two at a time. With a little shame I'll admit that, due to time invested in WOT, I will continue to read it. I'm curious to see if RJ can finish it.

OTOH, aSoIaF to me is much more engrossing after just two books than WOT is after eight.

Oops, sorry, I won't talk about WOT here anymore, really.

Here's the deal. After spending so many years reading these WOT books (I started them right after EotW came out in paperback; was that >10 years ago?) and like $175 on the books, I feel as though I have a right to be a bit critical. Also, that is $175 mostly as a student, which is a great deal of money when you are poor. I was a huge Jordan fan, saw the series plummet in quality, and continued to buy the books, thinking they would improve. Nope. They are NOT improving. I feel as though I've earned my right to be critical. But I respect anyone's right to like the books. Please also respect my right to rant like the disappointed, bitter, and crazed former fan that I am. I'll finish the series, but I'll get the books from the library from here on out. :)

If you must, you can refer to me as Siskel. I miss that guy.

And BTW - I can't imagine trying to discuss that series on a board. There are just too many characters.

Part of discussing a book is discussing whether the book is good or bad. I'm with Telisiane. I thought the first few books were good but then, apart from some good scenes, went downhill. Actually, I really got disappointed at the end of Book 3. We were led to believe that Ishamael was the Big Bad guy, only to find out after three books that he was really just an imposter. Its as if the One Ring got thrown in Mount Doom and then we learn that it was only a cheap imitation.

Jeff - And then when he actually resurrected some of the already dead bad guys, didn't you want to scream? And the introduction of Balefire? Sheesh. I wonder where the story would have gone if the publishers had not waved additional money in front of RJ. I doubt that he originally intended for it to go on this long. If not for the extra dough, he prolly would have wrapped this puppy up in about 5 books at the most. If he had done so, I'm sure that I would be talking about the series in a more affectionate manner today. RJ is definitely talented, but I think that even _he_ is tired of this series.

You're right about the resurrecting of supposedly dead guys. The one good thing about Balefire is that it apparently can permanently kill someone, which that series sorely needs. Of course, what happens if, let's say, a Forsaken balefires Mat with just a little balefire, and then Rand balefires the Forsaken immediately afterwards with a heavy load of balefire. I assume both Mat and the Forsaken are gone for good, but I wouldn't put it past Jordan to resurrect Mat.

Oh gosh! Then what if Rand balefires the Dark One? Does that mean everything goes back to normal, as in return of the sane male Aes Sedai and the peaceful Aiel and the flying cars? Do I then get all of my money back? ;) I could live with that ending.

Oh whoops. I'd get my money back only if RJ balefired my money and then someone balefired RJ. Nevermind. :)

Ah the strange (and very funny) world of balefire.

Still I thought it was a very clever twist that Ba'alzamon turned out to be Ishamael. I suppose some people saw it but it really blew me away. And there were loads of clues to his identity in the first 3 books. Similarly I liked the idea that the Dark One can resurrect his minions. OTOH I can see what you are saying about tWoT. After 8 books things should be moving along quicker and getting somewhere. And some of RJ's ideas have just gone stale eg. the big Rand v Forsaken confrontation. Still ignoring aSoIaF, tWoT, for me at least, is still very enjoyable.

Forgetting all above I agree with Revanshe. We don't need to add tWoT to this board. I must be getting old because I fear change.

Well, at least Padraig likes WOT. I've two things to add. I got the first 5 books free from the Science Fiction book club. No complaints there. Second, I bet after two books, everyone here was on the Jordan bandwagon proclaiming him as the second coming. Well, Martin's only at two himself with a prediction of 5 books total. Jordan's series was only supposed to last 7. I believe that some authors get carried away with a story, and fall in love with the world they created, and want it to last longer. My only real Nit with Jordan is that he wrote 8 other books while writing WOT, including a trilogy from 96 to 98, and a new Conan Collection (3 books).

Actually, after 8 books, it would kinda be a stupid idea to add a m/b for WOT to this site anyway.

It is my undrerstanding that the non-WoT books by Jordan since EoTW(the Fallon Blood, and both Conan books) were just republished from ages past. New Spring (from the Legends anthology) was the only interuption to the series I know about, and that was from WoTworld anyway.

Was that the case? Then I guess RJ's got some serious writer's block. That another Nit then.

Actually, there's like 5 of 6 Conan books.

Dirjj, I can truthfully say that I was not on the Jordan bandwagon after two books. I did think that he had created a very intriguing world with _some_ interesting characters and some excellent ideas. But two things bugged me almost from the very first that kept me from really thinking that Jordan was the second coming.

First, his women all were dreadfully annoying shrews and the guys all put up with it. What made it worse was that those intereactions were a significant part of the book that kept recurring. If Jordan thinks that's how men and women "really" interact, then I think that is a rather devastating comment on his own experiences. I kept waiting for some guy other than Lan to develop a spine but it just didn't happen. I've never wanted/needed a woman badly enough to put up with that kind of crap on a daily basis.

Second, I was a little stunned at the end of the Eye of The World because it _seemed_ like that should have been the end of things. Yet the story continued on. I remember thinking that I had no idea what the next book was going to be about because the story appeared resolved -- except for Moiraine's cryptic comments _after_ we thought the Dark Lord had been defeated.

The difference between the way I always viewed Jordan and the way I view Martin is that with Jordan, I always was eager to get to the end of the story and find out what happened. With Martin, while I want to find out how things are resolved, it is the telling of the story that I enjoy. I know that I will be thrilled to finally get my hands on the last of Jordan's books. With Martin, I know that I'll be bummed.
