HORROR: House on Haunted Hill
REVIEWER: Shane Gavin
RATING: A
REVIEW:
Did someone give permission to camp up horror?? YES!!! Finally a
horror film that puts a bit of jump scare back into the cinema. The ghosts
in a mental institution get pretty pissed in this film when Steven B.
Price (Geoffrey Rush) decides it's a good place to throw a party. The
guest's will each win 1 million dollars if they last the entire night. If
not there money goes into a pool to be split by those who remain at the
end
The film has the same kind of style that the original 1958 William
Castle Film did. And why shouldn't it? It has been produced by his
daughter Terry. The films characters built up just enough so we feel sorry
for them when they become ghost fodder. The opening sequence in this film
contains some of the freakiest Mental institution scenes in my recent
memory, Jeffrey Combs (Re-Animator) is absolutely wild as the doctor and
his ghost. The film turns into a mystery and a battle of intrigue.
From the moment the guests arrive till the moment they find out why they
were invited (REALLY WHY).
Geoffrey Rush hams it up a lot like he did in the film "Little
Bit of Soul" where he played the Australian Treasurer / Satanist who
soon becomes prime-minister of Australia. The ensemble cast
including Chris Katan, Famke Jensen, Taye Diggs, Peter Gallagher, Ali
Larter and Bridgette Wilson steam and scream up the screen until the final
frames. Keep watching after the credits for a little bit more.
The film scores high for being so much fin = A
