HORROR: The Sixth Sense
REVIEWER: Shane Gavin
RATING: A
REVIEW:
How do you keep an audience in suspense. Don't let them know they are
in suspense until the very end. The Twist on this film is equalled this
year only by the twist at the end of "Razor Blade Smile". The
M. Night Shyamalan has quickly become one of the hottest directors in Hollywood,
the film even manages to revitalise Bruce Willis in a less Diehard roll.
Willis and M. Night make this film something to remember 1999 by.
The movie centers around a child psychologist, Malcolm Crowe (Bruce
Willis) and his attempts to save children and his own marriage. The film
however plays extremely close to its chest and a synopsis is hard to write
for the film. Malcolm is trying to work out the problems that boy called
Cole Sear (Haley Joe Osment) has with seeing ghosts. Whilst the boys mother
Lynn (Toni Collette) finds it hard to keep it together, as a single mother.
The stark settings of the lower economy class slifestyle of the Sear
family adds to an overall GREEN film, for lack of a better word. As the
film progresses the colours seem to be less faded and much clearer. The
director seems to have spent a lifetime working thorugh the creation of
this film. The brilliance does not exist in the ending alone but everything
in between. The film continues to boggle the mind as you are able to transport
your way back through the film with a vivid clarity. It wasn't because
M. Night spent ages setting each scene, instead he spent hours making them
memorable.
The advertising for the film set you for a ghost story and that is
exactly what you get. A Bone Chilling tale, not partiularly scary but very
chilling in parts. M. Night's next film will surely be compared to this
film. But not often does a critically acclaimed feature film, come with
in an arms length of the #1 box office film of the year. The film ended
up in 2nd.
The film continues to play with your mind right up until the closing
curtain. If you have not seen the film I highly recommend that you scout
out a copy.
