HORROR: Warlock III- The End of Innocence
REVIEWER: Shane Gavin
RATING: A-
REVIEW:
The film is a the best sequel I have seen all year. However it could
work brilliantly as a standalone film. It needed not be part of a series.
The film is based around the bloodline of a University student that inherits
a house in New England (The Entire film is made in Ireland, but set in
the USA).
Eric Freiser is the director and co-writer of this film and if there
was one criticism I would give this film would be the first scene. The
initial scene is lacking any real interesting imagery.. Bruce David Eisen
has turned into one of the greater writers of film sequels and is clearly
a writer to keep and eye on. Last year he was behind "Dentist II"
one of those sequels that is said to surpass the original in the minds
of many Horror Fans. Eisen has a had a bit of sway at Trimark since Love
and a .45 and has used it to his advantage. The film is yet to release
in the US but I am sure it will be a great renter when it does. The film
follows 6 kids to and inherited property. But when they get to the property
they inherit something worse. They inherit pains of each of their friendships.
The films questions the emotional and physical depths a friend would go
to. How much does love mean when encountering pain and why the hell do
Warlock's always want to bring Satan up from the hell and give him a bride.
Surely Satan can find one of those when he gets up here.
The Film is a less a Warlock film and more a Hellraiser film. Clive
Barker's style filters through each scream and bizarre torture. The references
to other horror films are littered through out and not obviously spelt
out like Scream... The references are contained with in the frame and keen
spotters will pick up the Hellraiser look and the House 2 references..
Etcetera.. This film gets and A- because it plays less to the Teen audience
(While still keeping a University styled main cast) and newbies horror
fans and more on the horror fans that have been with the genre all the
way. oh and Bruce Pain can do no wrong as the evil Warlock. Seen last in
Cleopatra the mini series, He will be a taking on a large roll in the long
awaited film version of "Dungeons and Dragons" in 2000 alongside
Jeremy Irons.
