Milford Junction, Yorkshire

The Lynemouth - Wolverhampton aluminium liner.Transrail badged class 37/0 handles the late afternoon aluminium liner south towards Ferrybridge in May 1998.

A favourite spot of mine (and many other photographers) is the short stretch of line between Milford Junction and the next road bridge before the lines diverge.  Apart from a couple of road bridges, access to the line is not easily achieved.  This location is well known for a good procession of  different freight - from steel coil workings from Lackenby, semi-finished steel from Scunthorpe, petroleum products, Enterprise and of sourse, the huge tonnages of coal from the Selby Drift mine (Gascoign Wood).  Some coal traffic travels from afar a field as the Blyth and Tyne MGR circuits.

This location rarely lets me down, weather excepted of course.  Combine a visit to here with a trip to Knottingly station for a variety of photographs.

A sight consigned to history.   All of the former NP Class 59/2s have moved to the London area for use on aggregate traffic.  Via South Wales that is!

Leicester

The Midland Mainline has a significant window of opportunity of photographers to hit virtually every freight in a matter of a few hours.  The timings are excellent, this window is from early to mid afternoon, so taking best advantage of the light.

The best days are Tuesdays and Thursdays to catch a total of 6 freights in 2 hours or so between 12:55 and 15:00.  All of the trains are northbound workings and all are return empties of one sort or another.  On the odd ocaison I have stood at the location photographed, there has been a diagram for a Serco Reseach train returning to RTC Derby.  So seven workings are possible.

If you are prepared to wait until about 17:00 - 17:15, the British Gypsum container train may also run.   Bear in mind that this is  a run as required working and not guaranteed to turn up.

Passenger workings were restricted to Midland Mainline HSTs until 1999 when Class 170 Turbostars joined the procession of trains on the MML.  The increase in frequency of trains will disrupt the two-hour window described above; often the freight has an HST hard on it's heels by the time it reaches Wigston Junction.

60 068 wheels empty 2 axle Redland hoppers from Elstow down Kibworth Summit.

The photographic location shown is an overbridge close to the top of Kibworth Summit, south of Wigston South.  This is an overbridge on a moderately busy unclassified road.  There are several overbridges in the area, but this spot is ideal for the time of day, with photographic angles possible in both directions and an excellent backdrop.

Bardon hoppers are colourful affairs as seen in this view of the 11:30 6M54 empties from Thorney Mill.
