Passenger killed at Penrith
station
1 st June 1870
FATAL ACCIDENT ON A RAILWAY-PENRITH.
Wednesday,-Mr Catley, master of the Lowther Schools at Shap, Westmoreland, was returning
this evening from the Penrith station to Shap, and unfortunately entered a train which did
not stop at this station. He appears to have become aware of this fact after the train was
in motion, and attempted to get out, but became entangled between the wheels and the
platform. A porter and the station-master endeavoured to rescue him, and they narrowly
escaped being dragged under the train, but their efforts were unavailing, and Mr Catley
died soon after he had been removed into the station.
