Express train runs into goods van,
Tuesday February 5th 1907

RAILWAY ACCIDENT NEAR CARLISLE- An accident occurred midway between Milnthorpe and Burton and Holme on the L and N W Railway on Tuesday evening. The 5-45 passenger express from Carlisle to Manchester ran into a goods van, which apparently ran out of the siding after the local goods train had left. The express engine was damaged and partly derailed, but fortunately the carriages escaped, and none of the passengers, who were taken on by another train, however were shaken. The 6-40 train from Preston to Carlisle, which passed almost immediately after the accident occurred, was struck by debris and a few of the carriage windows were broken. Both lines were blocked, but by 2-30 yesterday morning, a breakdown gang had cleared away the wrecked van, and ordinary traffic was resumed.
