Accident to Fireman SERIOUS ACCIDENT ON THE RAILWAY 17th March 1863 An accident of a serious character occurred on Tuesday afternoon last to James Dodgson, a fireman in the employ of the London and North Western Railway Company. On the 3 38. train from Windermere arriving at the Kendal Station the fireman was not at his post on the engine, but was found lying on the top of the last carriage of the train, very badly hurt and insensible. At once the driver of the omnibus hurried up for Mr. Longmire, who gave stimulants to the poor man, dressed his wounds, and got him home. The injuries were found to be extensive scalp wound on the upper back part of the head, contusion on the forehead, and serious concussion of the brain. As to the cause of the accident nothing certain is known, as Dodgson has been insensible since it happened. It is thought that he was sitting on the top of the carriage when leaving Staveley, and that on the train passing under the second bridge from that station, which is lower than usual, his head was struck by the arch, so inflicting the terrible gash on the head, and that the wound on the forehead was caused by his being flung forward on the roof of the carriage. On enquiry on Friday morning, Mr. Longmire reported part return of consciousness, more favourable symptoms, and that he now has some hopes of the man's ultimate recovery.
