Collision at
Oxenholme
28th October 1971
"On 28th October (1971) the 18.00
Glasgow-Manchester (1M40) headed by Class 50s 412 + 446 collided with the rear of an up
car-carrier which was standing foul of the main line at Oxenholme. The front of 413 was
seriously damaged as well as the side of both locomotives and the scratched bodywork of
twelve of the thirteen coaches. The rear two windows of each coach except the last vehicle
were broken. Only three people including the driver and second man were slightly injured.
The two locomotives were later removed and Class 47 1757 took the train forward with
passengers to Preston where it terminated at 01.55."
