Landslide
near Tebay
(December 1936)
DIVERSION of the L.M.S. Royal Scot via the Settle
and Carlisle line in the middle of December was due to a landslide at Dillicar, just south
of Tebay-an outcome of the extremely bad weather of that month - which, incidentally,
derailed the 7.30 p.m. train from Crewe to Carlisle (Carlisle portion of the 4 p.m. from
Euston). The route followed in the case of, such diversion is usually via Hellifield to
Blackburn, Chorley, and Boar's Head, where the Western Division main line is regained just
north of Wigan.
