CARNFORTH Railway Station's
historic clock featured on a special BBC2 TV programme about Britain's
famous clocks last Wednesday evening.
The makers of 'Clock Watch' got in touch with Carnforth residents
through The Visitor and interviewed them about the clock's role in the
film Brief Encounter.
They relived their memories of 1945 movie starring Celia Johnson and
Trevor Howard were shown with the Carnforth clock in the background.
The film was directed by famous movie-maker David Lean with
Rachmaninov's Piano Concerto as the atmospheric sound- track.
The programme featured many moody shots of Carnforth Station with the
town in the background.
Although the station is currently somewhat run-down the programme
makers managed to capture its more attractive features on film.
The clock played a central role in Brief Encounter as Celia and Trevor
snatched time in between trains to see each other.
They were constantly looking up at the clock to see when they would
have to part.
Other interviewees spoke about the importance of clocks and the
development of 'Railway Time'.
At one time every county has its own local time then in l880 the
Government decided to standardise time across the country using
'Railway Time'.
One local resident, who worked at the station for many years, described
how at one time the clock was cleaned every day. Sadly the clock has
not been in good working order for several years and it is badly in
need of repair.
