Carnforth recreates a Brief Encounter
IF the classic British film Brief Encounter was being made today no doubt the two main characters would meet in some trendy cafe bar. Sipping a latte, mocha, cappucino or espresso they would sit in anguish trying to avoid giving in to their baser instincts. No doubt they would fail and eventually end up in bed together and the obligatory sex scene would ensue. In between the Trevor Howard character would probably have to deal with a train derailing because of Al-Quaida terrorists. But it wasn't. It was filmed in simpler times when sexual symbolism was a train rushing through a tunnel. A lingering reminder of those simpler times does, however, still at exist - at Carnforth Station. As part of a project to rejuvenate the once dilapidated station - voted the worst in the country just five years ago - the Carnforth Railway Station Trust has created a Brief Encounter themed refreshment room. It was officially opened by Margaret Barton, who played Beryl in the film, on Friday. The cafe is a replica of the one seen in the 1945 David Lean movie. Outside a fenced off area will provide seating during the summer months for rail enthusiasts to sit and soak up the atmosphere. Elsewhere in the building there is a gallery of photographs featuring the many stages of work on the station, a `brief history' and a hall open for use by the community. One of the rooms will be dedicated to Albert Halton, a First World War hero who received the Victoria Cross. The room will also host the town's book of remembrance.
