PLANS to regenerate Carnforth's famous railway station are progressing
at full steam with the opening of a new tourist and visitor centre.
The Carnforth Station and Railway Trust has opened the centre in the old station master's
office on the platform.
The project to give new life to Carnforth station, which was made famous in the classic
1947 film Brief Encounter, has been on track for a number of years. Peter Yates, of the
Trust, said: "This new feature is a cross between a visitor centre and a tourist
office.
"It is for people who want to know about the regeneration of the station. It is full
of information about the station, Carnforth and the region in general.
"We have used the old station master's office, it is the nearest building to the
famous clock.
"So far we have pulled together 500,000 towards the project, and we are waiting to
hear if we've been successful with a number of grants we've applied for.
"We are trying to get everything together for the regeneration work to start in early
January next year, this will run in line with Railtrack's station regeneration
programme."
