The workers soon to be standing on platform one... CONTRACTORS will move in next month to begin work on the redevelopment of Carnforth station. Railtrack are due on site in late September to tackle projects on the platforms. ramps. subways and roof coverings, followed shortly afterwards by Carnforth Station Trusts own contractors who will begin work on the refurbishment of station buildings. The plan is to dovetail the structural and renovation work to create a station for the 21st century but faithfully re-creating the look of the station in its finest hour when it formed the backdrop for David Leans 1945 classic film weepie Brief Encounter. An official ceremony marking the start of the project will be held on October 6. with invited guests from rail organisations who have supported the campaign by Friends of Carnforth Station to restore the station to its former glory Announcing the news this week chairman of Friends of Carnforth Station (21/9/1999 to 26/9/2002). Michael Chorley said he was delighted that after years of neglect and steady decline some serious work was finally starting on the old station. This is the whole thing coming together at long last, it is very exciting he said. Mr Chorley says that some preliminary clean-up work will be starting in the next few days to prepare for the contractors. Looking ahead to the completion of the scheme Mr Chorley said he would still be delighted to hear from anyone interested in taking one of the new retail units on the refurbished platform saying it is far better to involve prospective tenants in the design stage now, rather than trying to adapt premises at a later date. He declined to name any of the tenants who have already expressed an interest, but said he was happy with the type. style and standards of those businesses they were negotiating with.
