£53,000 Modernisation Scheme for Carnforth Station New 890ft. Platform for Furness Traffic Improved Services to the North-West Will Follow BARROW. Ulverston, Grange, Whitehaven, and the whole of the north-west
will rejoice in the announcement made by the London, Midland and Scottish Railway this
afternoon that Carnforth station is to be modernised under the Government loan scheme at a
cost of £53,000. This will mean improved railway services to and from the northwest area,
Under the new arrangements the present "up" and "down" Furness platform will become the "up" Furness platform, and it is proposed to build a new and independent down platform which will be 890 feet long. The existing passenger subway will be ex tended to serve the new platform. which will be covered for the greater part of its length, and there is to be an extension of the roofing over the main line platforms which are also to be slightly extended, the latter enabling them to deal with longer trains, As a result of the carrying out of these far-reaching improvements, the L.M.S. will be in a position to provide better rail facilities from Carnforth to and from the Furness area. which includes Grange, Ulverston (for Lakeside and Windermere), Barrow-in-Furness, Coniston, Millom, Seascale, and Whitehaven, Carnforth Station also handles considerable traffic for Morecambe and Heysham, and is the junction for Yorkshire and East Lancashire. HIGHER PLATFORMS. In carrying out these improvements the L.M.S. has also decided that the
time is opportune to raise the "up" Furness and the "down" main line
platforms to the standard height of 3ft. above rail level, thus bringing them into line
with the platforms at their other important junctions, and also improve the station
accommodation generally.
