Carnforth "Station Junction" Signalbox
First Signalbox. Although Carnforth Station has changed much over the years, some of the early items from the station still remain, and amongst these is the old, yellow, faced stone block built Furness / Midland Railway signal box. This signal box has been out of use as a Signal Box, for many years, having closed in October 1903, when the present Carnforth Station Junction box was opened. I think that in recent years, the building has been used as storage space by the local permanent way staff The first Carnforth Station Junction signalbox is situated at the north of end of the Furness platform, at Carnforth station. The build and opening dates of the signalbox are not currently known, but it seems likely that it may have been built at the same time as the 1880 rebuild of Carnforth station, as the stone built signalbox was ideally situated as a roof support for the overall roof, which was built at that time. Carnforth Station Junction signalbox, originally had 30 levers, which were later extended to 36 and finally to 38. The original signalbox was closed 17:30 on 25 th October 1903 when the new Station Junction signalbox was opened Second Signalbox
The second Carnforth Station signalbox was positioned slightly further away from the Furness platform (approximately 100 yards) and in the "V" of the 1880 Furness and Midland east curve, and the Furness main line The signalbox was opened after 17:30 on 25 th October 1903, and was originally 80 levers, later 83, but now reduced to 59. Carnforth F&M Junction and East Junction boxes were abolished on 7th November 1998 and were quickly demolished. F&M was open and in regular use right up to the end but East Junction was out of use and had not been opened for some time. When Carnforth F&M Junction and East Junction boxes were closed, Station Junction box was upgraded to replace the other two boxes, and this was brought into use on 9th November 1998. Carnforth Station Junction signalbox is still in use. [ Top ] [ Signal Box ] [ Home ]
