Directions for MasterMind

MasterMind is a number game. The computer will select a secret number with five different (unique) digits. The object of the game is to guess that secret number. Each guess is answered by the number of digits in the guess number that match or occur in the secret number. You will also be told how many of the digits are in the correct position in the secret number. Through a process of elimination, you should be able to deduce the correct digits using logic.

  1. To start: Click inside of the Guess Number entry box.

  2. Type your five digit guess number.

  3. After you have entered your guess number, click the "Guess" button.

  4. See how many of the digits in your guess number occur in the secret number.

For example:
If the secret number is "12359"
- you enter "11359"
The computer will report "Number Correct = 4" and "Correct Position = 4"
- you enter "55555"
The computer will report "Number Correct = 1" and "Correct Position = 1"

  5. Click inside of the next Guess Number entry box.

  6. Type your next guess number and then click the "Guess" button.

  7. Continue in this manner until you correctly guess the secret number or your 20th guess. If you correctly guess the secret word, the computer will print "Correct Score =..." If the computer prints 5 but not "Correct", this means that you have identified all five digits but they are not arranged to form the secret number. On your next guess, you must rearrange the digits to form another number.

  8. To see the secret number, Click the "Answer" button at the bottom of the page.

  9. To start a new game Click "Start again"

10. An Eliminating Digits form is at the bottom of the page.
      If you have ruled a digit in, place a "Y" in the Yes box under the digit.
      If you have ruled a digit out, place an "N" in the No box under the digit.
