Antenna Drive Motors
Six substantial electric motors were needed to drive the huge
antenna of the AN/FPS-35 radar, particularly in the heavy wind conditions
typical of the Montauk region.
The motors were removed several years ago. However, their steel support structures,
and their transmission cases remain. An opening in the antenna pedestal shields one
of the tranmsission cases.
