The steel structure seen in the photograph once supported one of several motors which powered the huge radar antenna. The Atlantic Ocean can be seen in the distance.

Montauk's setting at the edge of the continent enabled the radars deployed there to extend their coverage as far as possible in a seaward direction to provide an early warning of an air attack on the United States.
