"Perryman"...John G. Perryman died at his home near Springfield, MO, 28 Aug 1902, after a lingering illness incident to his advanced age of eighty-one years.  He had been a resident of this section for sixty-three years, having emigrated from near Nashville, TN in his eighteenth year.  He was among the earliest settlers in the Ozarks.  By energy, economy and good management he had been able to meet the adversities of pioneer life and rear his family who, in return, ministered unto him in his declining years.

His first wife was Mary Lemmon, sister of the late Barret Lemmon, and four children were born of this union:  Jacob L., James G., O. W. and Mrs. Sarah Piper.  His second wife was Cassa Grisham; of this union Mrs. Mary Myers, Walter, Mammie and Emma Perryman and Mrs. Laura Wheatly were born.

Deceased was a member of the Baptist Church and by a long life of usefulness left to his children and other relatives a good name and an example of sturdy manhood which they will remember and appreciate more and more as the days go by.

(Note:  This article leaves out children from both marriages that predeceased him.)

Newspaper: The Commonwealth, Ash Grove, MO, 27 Mar 1919
"Death of Mrs. Perryman"...Mrs. Cassa Grisham Perryman was born 20 May 1835 in East TN, died 22 Mar 1919 at the home of her daughter, Mrs K. B. Martin, near Springfield, MO.  She was married to Mr. J. G. Perryman in 1863 in Dade County, MO.  She was the
mother of several children, five of whom survive her.  In 1902, Mr. Perryman died, leaving her and the children, but the family had all grown to manhood and womanhood, a blessing that is denied to many.  She is survived by her five children and also by three children of Mr. Perryman, by a former marriage.  They are:  O. W. Perryman, Mrs Sarah Piper, James Perryman, of Ash Grove; Mrs. Mary Myers of OK, Mrs. K. B. Martin, Mrs. A. M. Ritter, Mrs. J. L. Wheatley of Springfield, MO, and W. L. Perryman of Pueblo, CO. Of her own brothers and sisters she is survived by Mrs. Mary Witt, Mrs. S. E. Petty of Dade County, and Mrs. Lizzie Wilson of Everton, MO, W. L. Grisham of
Greenfield, J. P. Grisham of Joplin, and L. M. Grisham of Fowler, KS.  Mrs. Perryman has been a member of the Baptist Church over half a century, having united when young, an opportunity thus given to reach maturity in Christian virtues which she evidently possessed, for her children say she was the best and dearest of mothers.  This is an excellent tribute, and a consolation to those who mourn... Funeral services were held at the Ash Grove Baptist Church, and her body placed in the Ash Grove Cemetery to await Him who shall come again.
"Asleep, yes asleep in Jesus; From which none ever wake to weep; A calm and undisturbed repose, Unbroken by the last of foes."

Notes for JOHN RILEY MYERS:
John Riley was born 10 Mar 1856 in AL he died 11 Dec 1928 Boynton, Muskogee OK married Mary Louise Perryman on 10 Oct 1880.

John's parents are John H. Myers b. 1 June 1817 Jackson Co., AL or TN d. 1864/65 durring the Civil War and Martha Ellen Pruitt b. 1824 in AL d. Feb 1860 in childbirth.  John and Martha had 10 children ( John Riley, George Washington, Sarah Ann Jane, Susan Catherine, Henry Thomas, Lydia Caroline, Joseph, James Monroe, William Alexander and Andrew J.)

John and Martha both died young leaving their children orphaned, he didn't know much about his family.  John is thought to have served in the Military during the Civil War (I am working to find documents to support this) Martha died in childbirth with either William Alexander or Andrew J.  or both, looking for any records of the births and deaths, especially an obit on Martha in Ash Grove, Greene Co., MO.  Their children were orphaned during the Civil War.  Sara Ann Jane may have been the one that put the children in the cellar when the Civil War Battle (not sure which battle, will check that out) came accross their land; whoever did was never seen or heard from again.  The kids survived thanks to her.

John Riley told of seeing a man's leg blown off by a cannon ball while peeping through a crack in the cellar door.  After the battle was over and the children had exhausted the food they lived in the forest on flour cakes (made from flour scraped up in an old mill and mixing it with water and drying the cakes in the sun) and berries, greens and roots found in the forest. There are several stories surrounding these children, one thought is that Henry and Agnes collected the children, another is that once the children had been found they were shipped off to various family members to earn their support.

Aunt Polly may have taken John Riley.  He was not happy with Aunt Polly (she was mean to him) and ran away at age 12.  He ran off and fell and fell in with trapper Tom Walker in TN.  Out of provisions, they found a burned church with a sheet of pewter on the altar; made bullets from it.  Traped and hunted in TN mountains, mentioned Winchester.  Lost partner Tom Walker, joined with wagon train.  Worked as teamster Memphis to Little Rock.

John heard his brother George was near Aurora, moved to Southwest Mo, it may be around that time that he worked on John G. Perryman's farm in Ash Grove, Greene Co., MO, where he met Mary Louise Perryman, while working on her father's farm.

John Riley was living with his son John Elmer Myers when he died on farm near Wainright, OK.

Notes for MARY LILLIAN MYERS:
In 1910 Lilly was widowed with one child; Alma Engel.
Telephone Conversation with Ruby Bell Myers Shields:

About 1912 Lilly married Turner (a carpenter) and they went to Texas and lived for quite some time in the Corpus Christi area. They moved back to OK and lived at Muskogee for a time.  They separated and went back together; and while living in Seminole, Oklahoma, Frank Turner died.  No issue from this marriage.  Lilly is buried west of Muskogee in the same cemetery as Vester Shields and Opal (the daughter of Jess Myers).

Third Lilly married Columbus Chambless; no issue.
Sally Jean Harr writes about him "Grandpa, as I always called him, once told me he came to the United States to work on the railroads when he was just a little boy.  I was more interested in his stories about the railroad than I was about his country of origin.  He was a grand old man with white hair when I was a child and he died after an accident, in I believe 1948.  He was in his eighties.  He always was so proud of Grandma.  He often told me she was a very good Christian woman, a good manager and lots smarter than he was as she could read and write and figure.  She did all the bills, etc. and instead of being resentful like some men from his generation would have been, he was pleased."  I called him "Uncle Cham", and well remember this loving and caring man.  A trip to Aunt Lillie and Uncle Cham's was special.  We didn't go very often when I was young (and we moved away when I was barely ten) but dearly loved the both of them.  Uncle Cham had many goats and they were his pride and joy.  Guess what!  We always had to have his own very special treat when we visited - goats milk.  Yuk, Yunk, Phew, Poo!  Did not like the goats milk but drank it anyway (forewarned we had better, by my parents) and smiled as we did so, thanking them for our special treat.  The better treat was a tour of their little farm meeting and petting all the new baby goats and seeing how much the others had grown since our last visit.

Notes for RUBY BELLE MYERS:
interview 16 June 2000

Daddy would have to mozey the animals up to the bank to get enough money to farm with and mother would naturally get attached to the animals that were on the farm. The one thing I remember in particular I was probably about twelve years old my brother in law Roxy's husband worked in Yourville and he had an oppurtunity to sell four of the horses he would've made a big profitt on selling those horse, mama couldn't stand the idea of selling those horses and putting them in that heavy work in those oil fields.

1914- Ruby recalls going to Missouri to visit her grandmother Perryman, her grandmother (Cassie) lived with one of her daughters and her family.  This farm was an unusally big farm for that time of course to me (Ruby) living in a shack out in the country, it looked like a mansion.  I remember being naughty with one of the girls, we would gather up the hen eggs and make mud pies.  I remember trying to climb that ladder (to the silo).

Cassie was a sweet little old lady, I don't remember her being able to do anywork

(Michael has a picture of Cassie and Mary)

I remember on this visit, I don't remember which party we were visiting but it was a relative that had a big cellar, my aunt? would go down there with mother and let mother choose what can goods she would want to open up and I was so impressed and I especially loved berries and oh she had lots of berries, black berries, blueberries in those days they grew wild and there were  plenty of people around to help pick them.  I remember doing that at my sister's place (Roxie) South of Checotah.  They had rented this place and it had a berry patch on it, I remember they brought in a truck load of berries at a time, we had coblers in a big ole pan.

I don't know much about Lilly's husband, there's a mystery behind that, later he married a man named Turner.  Skiny and frail.

Alma was her only child and my influence growing up and I'm sorry to say not the best influence in the world, we were so poor that our ambitions on overcoming it and having money and coming up in the world, now that would've been alright if we would've had someone teaching us in the right way and I feel I grew up with a little too much pride.

About the time her parents move to (Oklahoma) Indian Territory, there was a rumor that there was a way to work and make a good living in Ok so when they got here they were in covered wagons and on the way they were "intimidated" by Indians and the hard ship of living that way are unimagineable having all your property in a wagon and living.  I remember them talking about the Arkansas river bridge, when they came through it was nothing but a mud puddle and the horses had a hard time getting through.

Mother didn't get to see her family anymore until they visited in 1914.

Em-in Springfield

when i graduated from high school (in Okdahall???) I taught school for a year and then i saved  up enough money and in the mean time my term was choppy, my first term was one month I was substatuting for a sick woman she didn't do well, and they took me on for the summer term that was three months and I thought they'd let me go after that term was up and so help me they voted to keep me on until the spring, I was making $100 a month, which at that time was like a thousand.  I saved a little dab of that I bought some clothes, I didn't have anything old country gal you know.

1926-The reason I went to Missouri to go to college during the summer when I was teaching we had a months vacation, I went home and in the mean time my Aunt Nan and Dorothy (Nan's daughter) had visited us on the farm and had such a good time, that's when I was riding horses, we had some good horses so we saddled up several times on the horses and would race.  My Aunt Nan insisted that when my term was out to go up there and stay and go to college with her (Dorothy) I went up there and stayed.  I went to Southwest teachers College in Springfield, they had the idea that me coming from Ok I was half civilized, and my teachers wouldn't respect my education, they'd try to throw me on things like spelling they'd give me a hundred spelling words and I never missed a one, they thought I was living down here among indians with blankets wrapped around us.

Grandpa worked harder than any man, he'd get under the cars in any weather.

Sherry was sweet little onry thing, she had the colic.

Notes for EARL VESTER SHIELDS:
A visit to Grandpa's farm was a distraction from the countless rules that consumed my summer vacation.  Summertime was a great reminder of endless rules and limited amusement living in the city had to offer me as a child.  Rules were everywhere, don't run in the house, don't throw the dirt, and don't kick the ball at the house were laws made by adults who had nothing better to do than see who could make up the most absurd and most impossible laws for a kid to live by.  Look both directions before crossing the street made sense, but no dessert unless I finished my vegetables and making my bed everyday were completely meaningless.  Time out, getting grounded from the outdoors, and scrubbing the toilet was more of an annoyance than a deterrent for breaking the rules.  Grandpa's farm was a haven.  It was a retreat he had built just for kids and animals and each summer we would go visit.  One visit I learned that there was a reason to rules, and even the greatest place in the world had limits.  The lesson I learned on Grandpa's farm would prove to be greater than time out.
Grandpa's farm was a wonderful collection of wild life; owls, bobcats, and playful chipmunks roamed everywhere in the great outdoors.  There were sheep, chickens, and Grandpa's old red horse Goldie, who I had imagined was a hundred years old since my mom had told me how she rode her as a child.  Even the most unusual insect belonged.  There were dirt daubers that built their nests everywhere, under the eaves of the house, inside the doors of the cars, on the fence posts, and under the carport; they swooped all around, yet they never seemed to bother grandpa.  My brothers and I weren't allowed to stomp just any insect, or scare the animals.  Instead, grandpa would tell us what works they did, and how each was a special creation.  The horsefly was the only bug we could swap; they are three times bigger than the housefly and would bite Grandpa's old horse, Goldie.  Goldie's tail would flash side-to-side smacking the horseflies, and if we stood too close to her she would swipe us with her tail giving us a little sting.  We never got mad at her for it because we knew it made her happy to have some help with those varmints.

The best thing about Grandpas farm was Grandpa.  He was a gentle man of good build and tender eyes.  His strong, rough hands showed their wear from all his years of working.  Grandpa's smile was a combination of kindness and acceptance.  He didn't have fancy friends, boring hobbies, or stay inside watching TV, reading the newspaper, or visiting with the other adults, instead, he was outside with my brothers and me.  Grandpa had a way of making us feel special.  He always had stories to share about growing up in a large family in Arkansas back when the entire world was in the country and all the roads were dirt roads.  He filled our head with images of him as a young age working in the cotton fields during the day, and gardening, and milking the cows in the evening.  We were engulfed in tales about his move into the hostile Indian Territory as a young man, falling in love with Grandma, and moving to California during the Great Depression and Dust Bowl that hit Oklahoma where he built the aircraft used in World War II.  Grandpa had many great talents, but his biggest love was the farm he had built with his own two hands.

When my brothers and I came to visit, Grandpa would take us on long hikes through the land. The trees were so tall that they touched the sky, and in every tree lived a wonderful nest of birds, a curious family of squirrels, butterfly cocoons, or the grandest spider webs.  Grandpa knew the animals and their homes just he knew my brothers and me.  If we were quiet enough, we could hear a hoot owl, or the dut da dut of a woodpecker sending a Morris Code message far off in the distance.  With every step, we stirred the grasshoppers, causing them to fly all around us.  My baby brother, who was two years old and as ornery as the day was long, perched proudly upon Grandpa's shoulders, while my brother, Chris, swishing in his corduroy pants, and I in my favorite, Laura Ingalls Wilder dress that fit just perfect, strolled at Grandpa's heals collecting sticks and nuts along the way trying not to get left behind.  Back at the farm we would help with the many chores and my favorite chore was feeding the sheep.  Sometimes they would be dressed in their wool coats while other times they would be shaved down to their pink skin.  They had their own pasture and spent most of the time grazing.  When Grandpa drove his truck full of dinner down the dirt path they stopped grazing, and quietly walk towards the truck.  Grandpa said, "sheep are timid creatures; noise and commotion from kids could set them into a fit of uneasiness.  You're not to run around and holler while you're close to them."  We showed we understood by quietly nodding our heads.

One evening, Chris and I were playing chase around the house, running over the hills, and between the trees when right behind the house we encountered two of Grandpa's sheep.  Without thought we began chasing the sheep.  We hadn't noticed that the sheep weren't enjoying our game when suddenly both sheep jumped a barbwire fence.  All at once the fence down went down, tripping the sheep and entangling in their legs.  One of the sheep made an awful screeching noise, twisting and turning and getting tied up tighter with every feverish attempt to gain freedom.  The second sheep flopped back and forth and somehow managed to escape.  Chris and I stood frozen, with our feet glued to the very spot we stopped, all we could do was watch in horror as the sheep struggled and screamed, unable to get free.  We knew the sheep needed Grandpa, but neither Chris, nor I could move.  The trapped sheep was getting louder and fighting hard to get free.  The freed sheep stood beside the trapped sheep, unable to help her sister.  The commotion alerted Grandpa who ran frantically from within the house straight to his frightened, trapped sheep.  He reached down and with one movement of his hand he loosed the barbed wire and that sheep jumped to her feet and ran into the field.  Grandpa turned to Chris and me, still frozen sharing a look of shame, and in the sternest voice ever, demanded to know what we had been thinking.

We never gave Grandpa an answer to his question, and although the sheep was more frightened than injured we never chased another sheep. Grandpa could have taken the switch to us, scolded us, or he could have told our mother. Grandpa never said another thing about what we had done. I knew we had disappointed him, frightened, and nearly maimed his sheep.  That is when I realized that rules are not only everywhere, but they are important guidelines that protects me, others, and animals from accidents.  Grandpa continued to take us on long hikes, tell us stories of the good ole days, and let us help with the chores and little did he know by the way he showed his disappointment that he taught me not only the value of listening, but not all rules are made by adults with nothing better to do than ruin a kids fun.
