The Senator Cypress and Calvin Coolidge

Bald cypresses are not true cypresses; but, rather members of the pine family more closely related to the redwoods and sequoias. They get their name because someone thought their foliage looked like that of a cypress and because, unlike other pines, they lose their foliage
in winter.

Common in swamps throughout the southeastern United States, bald cypress wood is considered very desirable because it is highly resistant to rot.

These trees often, but not always, grow in swamps and even shallow fresh water as in rivers and lakes.
