Lem Turner Road
Garden City Map

This is by no means a complete map of Garden City; but, it is to scale. From the corner of Lem Turner Road and Dunn Avenue, it is about two miles to Trout River.

There was a time when no mail was delivered north of the Trout River Bridge. All those who lived on the north side of the river had to put up a mailbox on the other side of the river if they wished to receive mail. I am told that there was a line of mailboxes seventy-five feet long!

The first mail delivered on the northside of the bridge was left at C.C. McAllister's first store on the northwest corner of Dunn Avenue and Lem Turner Road. People in the area went to the store to collect their mail.

The first official post office was on the northwest corner of Lem Turner and Blake. It was built by a family named Szymanski and Mrs. Szymanski was the first post mistress. That building was eventually sold and a new block building was put up on the southwest corner of Lem Turner and Blake. That land was sold to Big Chief Tire Company and a new building was build on Garden Street across from the Garden City Methodist Church.

It is that post office that I remember. It was made of wood; and, it was so small if there were more than two customers those extra customers had to wait outside; but, that little post office is long gone now too, replaced by a large "modern" post office on a section of eastern Dunn Avenue, not on the map, which was renamed Busch Drive when Anheuser Busch put up a factory there.

Garden City Methodist Church The Garden City Methodist Church
had its beginning in a November 1926 Sunday School taught by Rev. John Ward.

The first services were held on Francis Street in a building owned by Mrs. Grace Szymanski. Mrs. Szymanski also donated the land for a new church building on Garden Street; and, local lumber companies and others in the community donated the materials and money. Under the supervision of Rev. Tom Coon, the building was ready for the first service to be held Sunday, March 20, 1927. Dedication services were held the following sunday.
